Hello. I am currently working on the front pump for my Ford 703 loader. The tag numbers on the Vickers vane pump is V250 8 6D 12, on the second line is S49 LH. I just bought the loader, and the seller suggested changing the seal on the pump to ensure it didn't leak. When I took the front bearing cover off, it was missing a few balls. When I took the pump the rest of the way apart, it appears there has been no damage and everything seemed to be in good shape(other than that bearing of course). The previous owner thought there would be a leathery or rubber seal behind the bearing...but I couldn't find one other than the metal seal. This makes me wonder what would keep fluid from escaping through the front ball bearing.

Due to not knowing if we could get parts, we left the metal seal and back ball bearing in the pump. Upon checking with my local ford dealership, they could no longer get parts for this pump. I attempted to contact Vickers, they have since been sold to Eaton. Upon contacting Vickers-Eaton, they are having difficulty and have been unable to even get a seal kit for me. I have been trying to do research, and it sounds like the "Vickers V-20" is a similiar vane pump, but I am not sure if it is the same as far as getting parts for my pump. I was able to get a new bearing made through Motion Industries, but other than that have been unable to find any parts for this pump(even a seal kit).

So I am left with a few questions. First, does the pump have some sort of seal behind the first ball bearing other than the metal seal(I can't even find a blow-up diagram for a V250)?? Where could I get parts for this pump? Any information you all can give you would be greatly appreciate. I tried to attach some pictures to this message, hope that helps.

You might check with Surplus Center (a site sponsor) to see if they can match up the pump with their inventory.

Not meaning to insult you but the pump has all the signs of an amateur hour installation. Using plumbing fittings such as the iron Street elbow on the pump discharge and the nipple (with hose clamps) I presume for the suction line.

I suggest you start with a new pump with proper hydraulic fittings. Hydraulic pumps are not expensive. A small amount of wear inside the pump, almost indiscernible by eye will limit the pumps ability to build pressure. If balls from a bearing are missing something went seriously wrong. A gear pump is all you need. Probably less than buying parts if you deal with the suggested Surplus Center

Post some photos of the loader valve as likely it too has the wrong fittings.

Hydraulic leaks, especially the tiny ones spraying out almost invisible mist, will inject hydraulic fluid right through your skin and necessitate immediate medical attention. A plumbing fitting with a crack is just the right way to get yourself injected with oil. A natural tendency is to hold your hand over a leak. Fine with a garden hose, seriously dangerous with a hydraulic system.

Your 860 model of tractor has 44 HP. This means a pump of approx 10 gpm producing 2,500 psi.

Koyker's web site has useful info.

Dave M7040, fyi, that is the way those pumps and loaders were put together, with standard black iron plumbing fittings.

Find me any credible hydraulics text that says plumbing fittings are acceptable for high pressure hydraulic service. Ask a reputable plumbing supplier to provide you with the spec and pressure ratings of such fittings. I think, from memory the answer will be 300 psi WOG, i.e. water oil and gas.

It is your choice to ignore my engineering advice. Good luck.

ran across this after recently picking up a Ford 860 with a 703 loader. seems like the conversation died with the wrong information in the last response. As tractor tech said the older ford tractors were manufactured with black iron pipe fitting for high pressure service. They are not run of the mill plumbing fittings from a big box store. They are basically scheduled 160 rated for 3000psi service. That said a NPT style iron pipe fitting will cost you well over $10 now and they are hard to find vs. the $3-4 for a modern NPT fitting from just about any hydraulic shop. If you have crusty old fitting use a modern replacement they are cheap insurance. Like wise if a fitting looks new or replaced and it’s iron I would be skeptical of it. Other wise good info here.

Hey, this an old thread, but thought i would try anyway

I have this same vickers v250 pump on my ford 600

This pump was obsolete a long time ago, and is a very odd 2 vertical bolt mount setup, which makes it hard to adapt another pump.

Anyway, it started losing lift and making terrible noises, so I took it down and found a bad coupling, and the wrong bearing on the pump drive end.

The bearing OD is loose in the casing, causing shaft runout and screwing things up.

I found a new inner bearing and inner seal ok, but no idea what the correct part number is for the drive end bearing.

I could go by dimensions, but part number would be way better.

Any help is greatly appreciated...
