Ford 6610
Have a 1982 Ford 6610 4WD Cabbed tractor. Tractor will not engage into 4x4. It has an electric switch (not manual) and fuses are good. Drained fluid and pulled solenoid checked out good as well. Any other thoughts or ideas on what to check next? Thanks in advance. JAG

Where is Soundguy when you need him! (Long time member who was very good with those Ford tractors)
Welcome to the Forum, and good luck with your question!

Welcome to TBN!
What year 6610? Is it a series 1, blue and white striped decal.
Or is it a series 2 with a black and red stripe.
Another way to tell is the earlier used a ZF front wheel drive (ZF on the axle ID) and the planetaries stick out of the wheel.
The series 2 had a Carraro front wheel drive and the planetaries are almost flush with the wheel.

Thanks! I will attach a picture. It does have a plate saying it was made in England I believe??? It is different as it has a column shift. It has white radiator cover but has a black striped 6610. It is a 1982 model.

Looks good for it's vintage. You take excellent care of it, I must say. My comment is if it's electrical or mechanical engagement, the final engagement will be mechanical, probably via a cable or/and lever on the center section. You need to check the mechanical engagement parts to make sure they are engaging correctly.

Had that issue with one of my large Kubota's and turned out the cable needed adjustment, simple fix. I have lockers on both ends of both tractors. Looks like outboard planetaries to me. My Kubota's are inboard so their is nothing protruding through the wheels at all. Just had it apart, had an outboard seal leaking on the right side and believe me, the outer hub with the planetaries attached is heavy, very heavy. Taking it apart wasn't too bad but getting it in the shop was a chore for this old man. Had to enlist the help of my neighbor. Well over 100 pounds. Actually, the first issue I've had with them where a seal gave out. Glad I own a 25 ton shop press.

That one sweet looking machine!
Soundguy would be jealous if he's still around. Bet it's not the original tires either. I just put new Trelleborg radials on my open station and 4 tires were a tad over 5 grand mounted here at the farm. That hurt.

Beautiful tractor! SynchroShift transmission (column shift). Series 2, and I was wrong about the ZF, used 1984-87, which this has, being only on series 1. Made in Basildon, England.
It has a multiclutch transfer case and it should be engaged in 4wd without oil pressure. It is oil pressure that disengages most hydraulic actuated 4wd clutches (#26), regardless of brand. Even when the tractor is shut off, the 4wd will be engaged. I am thinking that you have either a burned up clutch pack or something broken in the transfer case that is causing the clutches to slip.

You can try a couple of things. Jack up one front wheel with the engine off and try to turn the wheel.

By the way, did this happen suddenly or off and on?

Thanks Tractor Tech, based on other research (very little I could find online) I think you are very right. Everything I found mentioned that if the electrical components were faulty I would be engaged constantly in 4x4 vs not being able to be engaged. I will jack up one wheel and try to turn the wheel. Am I looking for it to be free spinning or locked in place? I am guessing free spinning means something would be broken in the transfer case? It is not sporadic as far as I know. I purchased the tractor and did not properly test it as I should have-so when I actually started to use it at my place, I noticed it was not working. I was so surprised with condition, hours, AC (which now has electric problems of its own), desired horsepower, row clearance, etc. That I technically did not recognize it wasn't working properly. High/low works great and everything else the seller said was spot on and I truly don't think he intentionally pulled a fast one on me at all, for all I know it broke on the trailer loading/unloading or shortly after arriving. (Feel like a bone head in my explanation, but that is technically how it played out.)

Sounds like the AC is low on refrigerant and that tractor will most likely have R11-12 and that is Verboten today so it needs to be refitted to R134A or Propane which requires a seal change and maybe a compressor and none of that is a cheap date and probably why the AC don't work.

Curious as to what you gave for it, inquiring minds want to know...
