I have a 6000 that needs transmission work. Can a hydraulic problem, especially being low on hydraulic fluid, effect transmission? Does the tractor have separate units for transmission fluid and hydraulic fluid? New to farming and tractors and would appreciate feedback

Jerseyfarmer, welcome to TBN!

I am pretty sure the transmission and differential are the storage tank for the hydraulic system. It is pretty common and is like that on my 7710.
What is wrong with the transmission?

I can't remember for sure but I think the 6000 only came with a Select O Speed transmission. If I am right then if you are having trouble with it then I can't even begin to help you but would recommend you take it to a New Holland dealer to repair.

There was a post on here recently and there was a link to a SOS tranny repair shop. I am sure Chris (Soundguy) will jump in shortly and be able to remember the link or the thread.

A Ford 6000 is a great collectors piece but it would not be a lot of peoples choice for a main farm tractor today. If you can post some more information about what your tractor is or isn't doing that will be useful for the smarter members here to help figure out your problem. Good luck and if you can could you post some pics of your tractor. Thanks.

I was told that the transmission was shot. Was cutting hay and using hydraulic system. Mechanic told me that I must have been low on hydraulic fluid and that caused transmission damage. Didn't quite understand as the transmission had been working and I didn't think that the hydraulic system was tied into the transmission reservoir.

You're going to find that there's a BUNCH of experienced, fulltime tractor mechanics, even New Holland (Ford) dealer mechanics that don't understand that transmission any better than the next guy. After a while Ford worked out the bugs but the SOS never really overcame the bad PR that the first ones caused. It's been a few years since the SOS went out of production so young mechanics don't have much experience with 'em.

Try arthurs tractors.. i believe I saw them professing SOS experience. A fellow named ralph alexander used to sell parts and offer advice on them.. but he's semi-retired now.

good luck on the 6000.. it only came with the 10spd tranny.. and no.. hyds sump and diffy and tranny are not common.

Good luck on the tranny! (I'd start looking for a 5000/5600 or a 66XX/7000/7XXX as a replacement tractor... may well be cheaper than the mortgage you have to take out to get the 6000 fixed... ;) )

You might want to start a new thread. This one is 5 years old.

There are some knowledgable folks here, and I am sure you will get some good answers. I have no idea though

I have a ford 6000 tractor and I live in GUYANA. The hydraulic and brakes have been giving me problems. Firstly, the hydraulic leaked out all its oil whilst ploughing my rice field. This problem has since been fixed, but the hydraulic is lifting slowly -with or without plough. What can be the possible cause? Ever since, I got this tractor I noticed that the brakes were working on and off, that is- they would hold sometimes, and at other times they will not. What could be the possible cause? This tractor has one pump, which supplies the power steering mechanism, the hydraulic, and brakes with oil. What oil should I use in this tractor? Really need some advice. Where can I obtain spare parts for this tractor?
