Anyone know what is the weight of the rear axle of a Ford 555B without the tires.
My estimate is 700 - 800 lbs.

A single trumpet housing with planetary, brakes and axle shaft? 310 pounds, estimate.
Both trumpets loaded and attached to center housing, 975 lbs estimate.

Per side?

Whatever you have will help. Will be replacing the wet brakes and need to pull the axle anf then pull the left and right axle housings.

Trying to get a handle on what weights I'll be dealing with. Can use my front end loader for the wheels and whole axle. Hoping auto type engine crane would work for one side. Otherwise will need to borrow another front end loader or backhoe.

PS. Looking for components weight not load on the ground.

You are doing it the hard way. Remove the hood, support the axles and pull the rear wheels. Disconnect the frame from the axle housings. Use the stabilizers to raise the frame off the axle ( leave loader valve in 'float'). Crib the frame. Drain the rear axle. Disconnect the brake linkages. Remove the trumpet housings one at a time and service the brakes.

Removing the hood keeps you from stuffing the rear edge of the hood through the windshield.

Thanks.
That's pretty much in line with what I was guesstimating.

Thanks for you suggestion. I will try it that way.
Sounds so much easier.

Have you done it this way or seen it done this way?

My orignal plan was based on the 555B's service manual. It is also what the New Holland mechanic and service manger was saying how they would do it. Might explain their $7k estimate including the parts.

Don't have a windshield, ROP ONLY.
Just open to the fresh air.

I worked at a large ford dealer in Atlanta all through the 80's and 90's when the 555's were new, never ever did we pull the complete rear to do a brake job, follow Ricks direction
and use a good engine hoist and it will go just fine. Do pay attention, several sharp edges on that trumpet housing mating edge, don't re-use the o-rings that seal the trumpet, new brake rod boots, and if it were mine, the axle seals would get replaced while you have it this far down and they're getting disturbed during the brake job. I'd be real pissed if I had to go right back in to do them shortly after all this work. I'm not sure about the dealer your talking to, or is this his way of telling you they don't want to fool with a 30 year old industrial?

Thanks for you confirmation on this method. I was just going by the Service Manual method. Figured there could be other easy ways to do it, but without firsthand knowledge or experienced feeddback, would be concerned about going down wrong path and creating LOTS of extra work. Had already planned on replacing seals and any gaskets. Too much work to SCRIMP on the small stuff.

The not so subtle message I got from my local dealer was they were backogged for weeks and didn't really want to bother with it. Don't know why. Work is works and, profit is profit.
