Tractor
Ford 5500 backhoe
Hey all.
I’ve got a 1970 ford 5500 that I regrettably ran out of oil. I’ve been trying to figure how I would split the tractor to get the engine and crank out.
I was reading through other topics and I saw from 2016 where a user LD1 says it can be done without splitting the tractor. Hopefully he reads this and can give me some info. Anyone else ever worked on an industrial ford 5500 TLB? This machine is very heavy duty I spent two years getting it going and I’m determined to have it running again by spring.
Crank needs to be ground and I need a new rod and piston and bearings all around. Thanks

Welcome to TBN!

Attached is the procedure from the 6500/7500 backhoe manual. Same tractors, just more power.
Hope you get it running again.

Thank you for that! I better get started. Do you know…the front engine mounting pins…when removed do they allow the engine to move forward? Because the engine is tight up against the front mounts mounted to the through frame pins.(above and behind the front wheel in second pic)
What else should I do while the engine is out? Clutch? Additional preventative maintenance?
Thanks again.

It will give you a couple of inches to move the engine forward.

Check wear on the coupling of torque converter as there is no clutch. Replace the transmission input seal. Replace rear engine freeze plugs.

Would you mind posting the section on removing the loader? I guess I only have the supplement manual.
Will be tricky with no engine power. Some of the pins don’t want to budge.
Thanks

Really no procedure in the manual or reason to do so, but I do have the description from the manual about it if it can be of help.

Ideally, you would want to raise the loader all the way up and block the cylinders with heavy angle iron, but if you don't have any way to lift the arms, then you are stuck.

You could possibly, if the engine isn't frozen up, turn the motor over with the starter while activating the loader lift, but this is a long process and requires patience so you don't burn up the starter.

Almost time to pull the engine.
How should I mount to the engine when I lift it out? I see there was a special tool for mounting to and lifting the engine but I’m not sure where that mounts. Any tips?
I plan on using a large tractor with a chain fall to lift it out.
If I set up a pallet, is this something I can do with the engine laying on its side? It’s too heavy for me to move around anywhere else. I need to get the crank out to be resurfaced, replace front piston/rod, inspect front cylinder, and bearings all around.I assume I should do the water pump also.
Thanks for any help.

Fasten a lifting lug through the bolt hole in the back of the head. Remove the water filter bracket on the front LH of the head to lift the engine out.
You should lay it on the left side. Probably take the exhaust manifold off so you can block up because the flywheel and back engine plate stick out beyond the width if the block.
Replace the water pump and oil pump. Also, the intake coupling hose is shot.
This is a replacement engine from about 1985-1990. Serial number at RH center bottom of block and date code on RH front block boss will tell what version and year it is.
May have 'tepee' style wrist pin bushings rather than standard bushings.
For the engine only, you can find parts at New Holland parts online book under model BSD444T.

Do need to remove these small bolts through this flywheel to pull engine out? Nothing really stated to do so. Got it to budge 1/4” but seems like something is holding it.
Thanks

Sounds like the torque converter might be stuck on the transmission input seal.
Through the starter hole, unbolt the flex plate from the flywheel. 8 bolts.
