ford 4500 diesel bench testing starter

I'm trying to see if I need a starter or a solenoid, or possibly even neither.
I'm not familiar with this type of starter. It has more wires then I'm used to.



So I have the ground cable and the hot cable hooked up. I touch the red wire I marked B to the hot side of the battery and the solenoid engages but the motor doesn't turn.

I have no idea where to connect to, to turn the motor by bypassing the solenoid.

I'm not even sure if this starter should work when I touch the B wire to the hot post. On a regular starter it should but this is a diesel, so I don't know, maybe not?
Like I said, I'm not familiar with this type of starter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Put +12v on the terminal at 8 o'clock and the other to the starter housing. That should run the motor bypassing the solenoid. Looks like the primary wire running off this terminal has seen better days, though...

Ground the starter housing. Apply 12v to the large terminal at 12:00. Jumper 12v to the male spade at 11:00. That will activate the solenoid, throw the starter drive out to the starter nose and spin the motor if all is good. Have the starter anchored in a vise or secured somehow, the initial torque will surprise you. If the starter drive engages but the starter does not motor, apply 12v directly to the terminal at 8:00. That will test the starter motor by itself.

So I had the wrong wire attached then.
I'll check it out in the morning. I'll try the spade at 11. If that doesn't work I'll check the motor.
I really believe the motor is shot but I wasn't sure how to even check it.
When I bought the tractor the guy said he thought it needed a starter.
Turned out the engine was froze up, which is what I expected. It was stored for a while uncovered with the exhaust flapper stuck wide open.
I think he fried the starter trying to get it to turn. The ground cable has most of the plastic burnt off.
Anyway. I'll let ya know what I find.

Let us take a step back. Is the male spade at 11:00 connected to or separate from the large lug at 12:00? If it is connected to the large lug, jumper to the yellow wire A or the male spade that the yellow wire is attached to.

The starter works.
I thought the spades at 11 were connected to the post so I didn't really pay them any attention but after RickB pointed out that they're not I tried them.
I put the pos cable to the post and put the wire at 11 to it and nothing happened.
While the wire at 11 was attached to the post I touched the red wire to the positive post and the starter worked.
I got it back on the tractor and it turns it over ok. Its a little slow but I'm using a tiny battery out of my 400. I'm pretty sure once I hook a proper battery to it it should work fine.
