Ford 4000 SelectOspeed Gas 4 Cyl. 1963
Hello
I have a SelectOspeed Ford 4000 1963 Model 4 cylinder gas with 10 speed and two reverse. The problem I'm having is that I had it parked in the shop for seven years without starting it or moving it all. Today I installed a new battery, cleaned the carb and she runs like a dream except I cannot get it to go into gear. I have forced it to a point that the nut slipped in the housing. So I took the shifter apart, cleaned it up, greased it and put it back together tightening the nut real good. Now I still cannot get the shifter to move at all into any gear. The cable looks as good as new thankfully. I have tried it running and non running and it will not move at all. I have tried rocking the tractor thinking maybe that would move some gears around to assist me into shifting but I have not had any luck. I have read so many forums and cannot find any answers to my problem. I also want to comment that I've owned it for 15 years and have never ever had a problem until now due to my own negligence. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks for all the great advice on your forum.

It sounds like the camshaft (29) in the transmission and/or the valves it actuates are stuck. ForumRunner_20140916_220215.png

Maybe have some water in the oil or condensation that seized them after all these years? There is a procedure for removing the shift cover if you are not familiar with it and by all means, don't force the shifter or cables.

I was hoping there was going to be an easier answer come along then what you think, I've been afraid I'll have to pull that cover off and I'm not looking forward to doing it. I have one more guy to hear from they call Larry that may say the same thing. I do have all the manuals and read it several times to see how to do it. In the manual it say's to shift into tenth gear in order to disconnect the cable, If I cannot shift it I have no idea how I can follow procedures in the manual. I have read in some of these forums where guys have took it apart without any measurements and wondered how they ever figured it out? No doubt I will follow the procedures by the book to disassemble and assemble as much as possible. Thanks for your input, picture, and reply. Much appreciated.

When you loosen the nut on the tube where it goes into the top cover, you can loosen the shifter from the sheet metal and as you lift it move the handle to tenth gear and you will be able to disconnect the cable.

Hi Gary
Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if you might know if the cover would raise just about an inch or so just enough for me to see whats going on and maybe get a screwdriver in there and pry it into place gently if possible. Any idea about that without disconnecting anything just yet until I'm 100% sure that it has to come apart? Thanks

You probably will have to remove the cover all the way. Which means the PTO cable also. An IT shop manual will help with instructions on how to go about removing the cover.

Hi Gary
Just responding back to let you know that I was able to leave the Pto cable attached and just removed the shifter cable. Swung the cover towards the Pto cable and tied it up to the steering wheel to hold it up and out of my way. I then was able to remove the shift assembly and free up all those pistons without taking them apart I reinstalled the shift assembly, made a gasket from permatex, let it set overnight then retorqued the bolts. Adjusted the shifter linkage to my measurements, put it back together and now it shifts perfect again. No leaks and no problems. Really a easy task if you don't unscrew the Pto from down inside the trans. Took a lot of thinking but it was sure worth it. Thanks for all your help. Now I have another problem that I just posted about the lift cover on the hydraulics. I removed the bolts and cannot get it off except for moving it up and down a half a inch.. I have read through the manual but cannot find anything attached that would hold it down. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks Again. Robb

I have a 1964 4000 and am having trouble loosing gears and reverse when the tractor has been in service a short while. everything works when it is cold. Has anyone found a source for the filter inside the housing for '64 and earlier SOS? I am going to change the fluid and try adjusting the bands.

Hello NevadaBil,
There is a filter right below the cover where the two cables join into the case for the shifter and the pto cable. If you have a manual follow the instructions to remove the cover. If not here is how I did it but some might frown. I loosened the shifter housing from the shroud, remove the bolts holding the housing and I took the pin out of the pto handle and removed it from the shroud so I did not have to unhook it from the housing or inside the trans. I then put the shifter in tenth gear and remove the nut holding the shifter cable to the housing. slowly pull up gently and you will see where the two cables are hooked together. Unhook the two cables and then sit the shifter to the side. I then tied the cover straight up as far as I could so I could get my hands into the case and remove the filter. I also wanted to mention that after you remove the shifter you should measure the shifter cable from the bottom of the cable to the mating surface of the nut on the cover plate or in my case I measured from the bottom of the cable to the mating surface of the cover, I just thought that was easier. Be sure you use a magnetic nut driver if you have one because you do not want to drop those two nuts into the trans holding the filter, then just I believe you unbolt the tube from the selector section called the camshaft on top of the manifold I believe it's called? I forget and lift it straight up. Now you might be able to get the filter out without loosening those bolts holding the tube but I forget. Now when I put mine back together I cleaned the mounting surfaces real good and then cleaned then with lacquer thinner so there is no grease left over. I installed a bead of permatex blue on the mating surface of the trans and let it sit for two hours. I then installed the cover carefully and only snugged the bolts till the next morning did I torque them down to specs in which I forget as well. Now as long as you did not shift the cable in or turn it in the trans there is no need of adjusting it. Just put the shifter back on and hook them cables back together and tighten it down after you get the shifter back up on the housing. Then reinstall the pto into the housing and reinsert the pin into the handle and your done. Now that is the way I did it and I have no leaks and everything is in good operation except for some other problem I'm having with my lift arms now not pertaining to this. Good luck and let us know how you made out. Also remember this is the way I did it and you really should follow the book as closely as you can. I was just scared to unhook the pto in the trans and then have a problem hooking it back up. Hope to hear back from you with your progress. Take care for now.

Ah the joy of a select-0-speed. A guy I was working for had one. He of course knew everything and took one all apart once to replace a few pieces inside. Then he took a look at what he had done and chickened out. Ya that's right my next job was to put it all back together again. Nothing was laid out in order so I got real good at taking everything back apart in order to put in that one piece that I wasn't sure where it belonged. I was fortunate to have a service manual and a parts book. I still remember having the motor and transmission sitting on blocks running and me checking speeds to see if I had all twelve of them. (10 forward and 2 reverse) I wasn't going to put the rear end back on untill I knew it all worked.

It's kind of a neat transmission. All the clutches and bands are applied by springs. Hydraulic oil pressure releases the clutches and bands.
