1963 ford 4000 industrial
I just bought a 63' industrial 4000backhoeand loader for 700 knowing it had some issues. The 3cyl diesel motor runs great but trans doesnt seem to be transfering power to the wheels. Clutch was stuck so I blocked it and used a lot of carb cleaner and pb blaster to get in to break free. now it doesnt run like it should it will move on its own power but not like it should. The clutch works but not much throw to it. How does the high/low selector work? Which is high which is low? Anybody know the shift pattern? I imagine its a clutch issue anyone aGree? Any help is appreciated

Insufficient information but it sounds like the clutch is worn out/slipping.

FWIW, if it is a 1963, it is a 4 cylinder. If it is a 3 cylinder, it is a 1965 or later.

The Sherman shift pattern depends upon the type of the Sherman transmission. Most likely it is a combination ( OD/UD/direct) but it could be a reverser. Is the main transmission a single range 4 speed?

Can you smell a clutch burning? it's a pretty distinctive smell.

If it's like a typical Ford tractor 8x2 tranny, the hi-lo is lo forward, rear hi, with neutral in the middle. The transmission shift pattern is: 1st, upper left; 3rd, lower left; 2nd middle forward;rev, middle back; and 4th is fwd right. Hope that makes sense. Can't help with the Sherman.

So.... I was mistaken on the engine for some reason I thought I only counted 3 injector lines when in fact there are 4. so it is a 4 cyl diesel. And after doing some research I found the trans is a 5speed with reverser. to test the clutch I started motor put it in 1st gear and watched the pto shaft and it doesn't spin with clutch out. So this is the clutch yeah?? it has to be so I would like any info on replacing the clutch in one of these machines. It has a frame like a truck and I cannot see where it splits. Could I lift the motor above the bell housing and change the clutch then? or do you have to split it? and if indeed I have to split it anyone know where I can find a manual? Ihave done several clutches in my day on trucks/suv's just never on a tractor. Thanks in advance

i think you still need to do LOTS more research on what you have.
5spd and reverse don't fit either.

post a pic of the machine you have!!!

so far it's a 4 cyl with a mechaincal tranny.. and some sort of aux tranny.

have you actually engaged the pto with the lever via your left heel?

sherman in gear?

I will try and get some pics up.

It has cable power steering and from what I gather that was available 63' and 64? It has a cast nose piece with 3 big holes near the top, for lights I imagine.

It is a mechanical tranny with a REVERSER because when I drive it and go forward I can stop pull the reverser lever torwards me and then I go backwards. The reverser lever is on the left side of tractor and has forward, neutral ,and reverse positions.
aS FAR AS THE SHIFT PATTERN i THINK THERE ARE 3 GEAR UP TOP AND 2 ON THE BOTTOM. It is a tough call though because it doesn't seem as smooth as a truck trans

in neutral with pto engaged it spins and when I push the lever forward it will disengage and stop spinning
Yes the PTO lever was engaged When I tried testing the clutch. and the shaft would not spin as long as the wheels didn't.
THIS IS MY FIRST TRACTOR AND AM LEARNING ON THE FLY SO BARE WITH ME.

Sounds like a 4 cylinder HD industrial model. The Ford 5 speed transmission was not used in this model. Most likely it is a four speed (+ reverse) with a Sherman reverser.

Your tractor does not have live PTO. For the PTO to rotate, the PTL lever must be engeeged AND the clutch must be engaged (up).

Regardless of issues, it sounds like a steal at $700.

i agree.. I've never seen a 5spd.. even the non live sort.. any anything with a pre-tranny. would have to be a 4spd.

cable steering.. ugh!

So I still do not see any breaks in the frame where it would come apart. should I try unbolting engine at bellhousing sliding the engine forward and lift it out to access the clutch?? I would buy a manual but obviously have no idea the year or model of the tractor and don't want to waste any money. any insight on the clutch is appreciated
