Ford 3910 starter issues

Good to be part of the forum. I have a ford 3910 with a Perkins 3 cyl. Diesel. I'm in the process of putting a new starter on. That's what brings me to the forum. I've been having trouble starting. My son took the solenoid apart and reassembled it. When I charged the battery and tried to start the tractor, smoke came from the starter. I'll be looking for some direction on connecting the wires to the new starter.

Ford tractors don't have Perkins engines. Ford and Perkins both used CAV fuel injection pumps and filters; that's about all they have in common.
Positive battery cable and accessory feed wires (2) connect to the upper stud of the solenoid. Solenoid trigger wire has a female spade and connects to the male spade on the solenoid. Battery ground cable connects to a stud on the front cover of the starter or to a starter mount bolt. lower stud on the solenoid connects directly to the starter motor. Nothing else goes on that stud.
