Help!
I have a FORD 3910 diesel, old but low hours <600. Have had it for 13+ yrs. Do basic maintainence. Problem figuring out starting problem? New battery last year, replaced starter/solenoid,OEM ignition switch last year. Turn ignition switch to start and panel lights up but nothing-no click or starter turnover. Checked battery, charged, voltage 12.9 when off, earlier when engine was started voltage did not increase. Thightened fan belt and rechecked voltage while running and Battery voltage 13+. Ran and started without difficulty for several weeks and now starting problems. After ignition switch failed to start the starter, rechecked the battery Voltage ~12.9,Charged battery overnight and tried to jump start with battery charger in engine start mode, 100 amp setting, and no change. Turn ignition switch on no solenoid click and no turnover of starter. I have checked all the wiring connections-OK, I tried tapping the solenoid housing in case it was sticking and same results. ? where to go from here. Someone told me you can turn the ignition switch to the run position and then using battery cable type wire and check the starter by hot wiring it bypassing the solenoid. I wanted to get your opinion before I tried this? How can I check to make sure the battery has adequate amperage? I am losing the war against the vegetation as my tractor sits idle!
