Can anyone advise me about what appears to be a wire descending from ignition switch to a plug (sensor) directly below the ignition switch in the transmission casing.I assume it is a sensor for hydraulic oil. How can one determine if this sensor is defective and how is it removed. Doesn't appear to be a screw in unit, does it simply need to be extracted? This old girl occasionally won't start w/o jiggling this wire.

It is more than likely the neutral saftey switch. It allows you to only start it in neutral.

Any suggestions on checking out this connection? Sometimes starts w/o a problem. Other times must wiggle this wire as if some connection is loose or defective.

Without a volt meter, no. Do you have a volt meter?

it's a simple NS switch.. it looks for the range selector to be in neutral before you can start. if the wires are good and it is causing problems, it's either the switch or the switch not getting moved enough. the 65+ machines used them..

Yes, I keep one in my truck.

It probabally has two wires going to it.

And just a guess, but typically it is a normally open switch that needs to be closed when in neutral to complete the circuit and allow for starting.

Use the DVOM and check these things out. Like unplug the wires and check the ohms across the switch. It should read 0 or near 0 when in neutral and infinity (no continuety) when in any gears.

If you consistantally get these readings, move on to the wires. Look for breaks. Check resistance of the wires from the switch to where ever they go to. Try wiggling and moving them when doing this as well.

Worst case scenerio....replace the two wires with new ones. Shouldnt cost you more than $10. For me...I have connectors and wires laying around and it wouldnt cost anything but time. And if that doesnt get it, the switch shouldnt run you more than $50.
