go to the tractor... with machine off, grab the pto stub and see if there is any thrust play. ie. can you pull the stub out or push it in any?
if so.. it will walk the pto out of engagement and wear the splined coupler and the pto shaft.
it COULD be a bad detent or worn fork.. and will produce the same results.
i'd check the pto shaft first however.
