When I step on the clutch to engage or shift the gears or engage the PTO, there is some grinding of the gears (especially with the PTO). I have to jam the PTO to engage it because the gears are still turning. If I engage the PTO with the engine off it is too much load to start.

Any suggestions on how I would repair this?

Are the repair manuals a good guide for this kind of repair?

Thanks for all the good advice in helping us get our tractors up and running!!

Either you need to adjust the clutch(s) OR the clutch(s) may be sticking. Start off by adjusting main clutch, then pto clutch. Service manual will walk you through the proceedure.

I don't like I&T Manuals. Too much left out. Too much erronious info for my liking. But... They'll get you through a clutch adjustment without much fanfare. I'd rather have the Ford manuals myself. (Owners, Service, and parts)

Sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaging. If it was working normally and suddenly started doing this, there's a chance the clutch plate is coming apart. A chunk of clutch lining could be trapped between the clutch disk and the flywheel or pressure plate. This would keep some power going to the output shaft even with the clutch disengaged.

Try adjusting first, though.
