I just acquired one of these that supposedly has had injectors replaced last year as well as injector pump. I get down to starting it on Wednesday after acquiring it and it fired no problem, mind you it had been running earlier and it was warm out. I had run it at that night, and it was dark so if it was smoking alot then I could have missed it, but it ran and pulled great. Only problem I did have was the lights were really dim when I got home finally, and had been dim while cutting too, assuming its battery related. The next morning not so good. The starter, which is also supposedly new, was also sticking last night which caused me to have to get a jump Each time here at night and morning when the starter was sticking and it ran the batterys down very quickly. It has also been in the low 30s late 20s here temperature wise so thats not good on a weak battery anyways. Thursday morning brought with it not only the starter issues again and the battery problem, it billowed a ton of white smoke again prior to starting, then blew off as it warmed up. Now I guess that really isnt a huge problem, smoking like that initially but Ive also read its not normal. Either way, we had to spray ether into it even before it would even turn over. I ran it that day all day until 5pm, and didnt really notice anything that wasnt normal with it, I also had Lucas diesel treatment in it as well so I dont know if that might have prevented the inevitable blue smoke. Now getting down to the point I started it today, after putting a 3rd 5 gallon jug of diesel in and after its initial white puffs and warming up, it didnt blow off the smoke. It just kept smoking and was starting to have a blue hue. When you bring it from and idle to max rpm, it will puff a bit of black smoke but will primarily be blueish hue. Now I used this Wed night and Thursday 8 to 5 So all in all I have put over 10 hours on it and it doesn't seem to have used any oil. Now I am getting back with the guy I got it from and hes all pisesed off at me now saying I am too hard to deal with and thats just what diesels do and getting nowhere. He claimed prior to this it used no oil and I havent seen any oil be used. What could be my problem here.. Could it be too much diesel being injected and all of it not getting combusted? I did notice sometihng which I think is the injector pump, a line, that wasnt attached to anything on pointing down. I need to get some pictures I guess of that for anyone to be sure as to what I am talking about, but maybe some light can be shed on what I have brought up about the blueish smoke. I had read something about a bypass line going back into the tank that could cause it? Or maybe my idea on the smoke might be right? Could the Lucas diesel treatment even prevented it from smoking like this? I dont know. Any help is appreciated, sorry about the length of the post and hope I didnt ramble on too much. Thanks a ton.

It does sound fuel related. Could be a clogged fuel filter, air filter or with the pump. Do the easy ones first and change the fuel filter and take off and soak/spray/clean the oil bath filter element as well as put new oil in the bath. 5w30.

The thermostat could also be sticking and the engine staying cold. The old fords don't burn super clean and will fog a bit, especially when cold.

On the brite side, the guy didn't lie about using oil!

what is a good place to get a service manual on these?

used and CD version on ebay. (search "ford tractor service manual") cost is 13.99 buy it now for the 2000-7000 models.

new - places like ytmag.com or the ford dealer.

The I&T manuals are less expensive than the ford manuals, but have less detail. They are ok, if you already mostly know what you are doing.

Well I dont know how long its been ran like this with the blue smoke, and if it is fuel related, and if the injectors were replaced last year, I hope this hasnt done any damage to them. I am sure that this could dirty up the internal components real quick would it not?

If it's just a clogged air path, no harm done. Just work the snot out of it and it will be clean and happy.

If there is a bad injector, then you could have issues.

What have you checked and found since the first post?

none im taking it back to the guy i got it from tomorrow hopefully and hes replacing the starter and batteries and i hope he can fix this problem so i was going to go to him with abit of ammunition first and see what what he will do for me. if it is an injector then he should replace it cause he said its warrantied on that much i just hope he sticks with it. the injectors were supposedly replaced last year like i said... could it be the pump is turned up way too much and instead of burning black and its not able to burn it all and some is combusting properly and some not? i honestly dont have any idea im totally speculating from what ive researched.

ive already expressed to him about the smoke as ive explained here and all he says its a diesel, diesels smoke and gets pissed... yes diesels do smoke, they mainly blow black smoke when u turn the pump up.. and i knwo this is absolutely not normal, but being as i cant explain how i know its not normal i have nothing to go at him with u know? im actually first year business owner this year, and have had some bad luck with my tractor side of the business and i am just trying to make sure things are right and everything is good to where i dont have any issues. its been a nightmare so far. so im trying to set my next year up nicely.. i thought this deal sounded good, he made it sound good and now im having this issue.

or could running bio diesel through it make a difference?

With out seeing how much 'blue' smoke there is, I wouldn't be able to tell you what is normal vs not. Plus, I don't know what it was like before.

I take the seller has not seen the tractor since you bought it. If they are getting defensive, I wonder.....

I have a 2640 JD and when it idles, it smokes (can't really tell if it's blue or white). Not quite sure if it's diesel or oil related. It does use up oil a little, maybe a quart or half a quart every two tanks.. or maybe longer. I have a 3020 JD that smokes too. After a nice little workout, it smokes more then when you first turn it on in the morning. I'm not worried w/ my tractors..... but like I said, I didn't see how much smoke there is.... nor what it was like before.
