What can one reasonably expect to pay to have rings replaced or redone to improve compression?
Want to see if refurbishing the old girl is worth the time and effort

Get ready to spend some money. Wanted to have my dealer replace the radiator, hoses, water pump, fan belt, generator, seat, and check out breaks. He wanted $2,000 to start, and all this stuff is simple bolt on, etc. Dad had the engine in the 2000 rebuilt back in the late 80's and it cost near $3000 then. This was a gas engine. But, look at the bright side. Once you spend a few thousand to patch them up, they are ready to go for quite some years to come. Let us know how much they quote you.

I will get some quotes and let you know. this of course is a diesel, starts when warm , needs a little "go juice" to start when cold. I suspect compression, but then it could be a lot of things

$2100-2800 should cover it. Mainly that extra cost is figured in due to crank issues. I would however, highly recommend that you don't just replace the rings, but do a complete overhaul. Replacing the rings and not the pistons, valves, gaskets, etc. just doesn't make sense. Since the motor is "open" just go ahead and do it all, thats what we recommend anyway.
