Make sure that you have the primary ignition circuit performing correctly. You'd be surprised how many carburetor "problems" are eventually found to be a weak spark. You need a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, the color of lghtning.
Are you sure you have the carb adjusted properly. Make sure you don't have an air leak around the Carb's metering section. The usual culprits are worn throttle shafts, leaking gasket at the carb/manifold interface, cracks or rusted spots in the intake manifold and a leaky manifold gasket.
If you have the requisite FAT, BLUISH WHITE SPARK, AND the carb is adjusted properly, AND you have no air leaks around the carb's air metering system, then a good cleaning of the carb is called for.
