Ford 2n alternately backfires then run fine in neutral

I had the same problem with an 8N it turned out to be the plate inside the governor. A groove had warn and the bearings that ride on the plate controlled the throttle would stick in the groove. Took it to a machine shop had it ground flat again and it has been working for several years no problem. Here is a good video on the governor 8N, 2N governor rebuild
