Ford 2810
I started a thread in another forum and haven't had much luck so I thought I'd start one in the Ford/NH forum. I have a Ford 2810 (approximately 1988 year) that's not used a whole lot but now that I need it to haul wood it doesn't want to start so I decided to put a frost plug heater in the block. The only place that it looks like it can go is right above the starter to the right. Is this the right location? Does anybody know the specific heater item number that I'll need just to make sure the element doesn't touch any metal inside.

Thanks,
Danny

I believe thats the correct location for the heater. I have a Ford 4610 with the 201 Diesel and that's the location mine is installed in. Go into the NH website under Parts and locate the correct part number. You can also go to www.phillipandstemro.com and look for their part number. They make most of the block heaters. The installation instructions generally tell you where they go and what the orientation is.

Typically they are oriented at either the 12 or 6 o'clock positions. This is to make sure that it does not come in contact with the cylinder etc. I usually stick my finger in to make sure on which direction has the most room and put it in that way. Tractor Help has the heater listed on their site.

I've got one on my tractor and love it. Starts so much easier, runs better at first. It's like starting a warm tractor. If you leave it plugged in long enough, the heat will conduct a bit through the entire tractor and the transmission behaves a bit better also. Best $ I spent on the thing.

If you rotate the heater after it is fully seated but before it is tightened, the range of motion that exists without having the element contact the block can be determined. Then the heater can be centered within that range and tightened. The OEM heater contains detailed instructions as it is sold with the intent to be installed in Ford blocks. It is also about the same cost as the one listed in the quote, especially if no shipping cost is incurred.

First of all I want to thank everybody for the replies and links. The main reason that I don't really want to buy one at a dealer is price. I called the nearest New Holland dealer today and they want $48.?? for one and didn't have it in stock. That would mean two trips to the dealership. Amazon wanted $16.?? for one and Ebay had one for $21.?? plus free shipping but I don't know if it's the right one yet. If I can't confirm for sure I'll have to shell out some more $ for one that I know is right. I know that 20 some dollars isn't a whole lot but I have to save when I can.

I got on the Kat's and Phillips and Stemro sites but they don't have anything listed for my tractor. I called the Kat's manufacturer and he couldn't give me an answer for a 2810 tractor and said that I had to tell him what specific engine that it has. I'll call him again when I find out.

Again thanks for the help and if I do find a cheaper one that works I'll post it here in case somebody else needs the info.

That makes sense, except for the part about making 2 trips to the local dealer. They don't have a phone? I take phone orders all day long and encourage customers to call and verify my stock before driving in and barking about me not having what they drove to get without knowing if it was here or not.
Any block heater for a 3, 4 or 6 cylinder Basildon produced Ford engine built between 1975 and 1999 will be 1-1/2" in diameter.

I'm just guessing that since they don't know me that they wouldn't order without prepayment and they're about 20 miles away. I have bought a few parts from them over the years but I'm sure that they don't know who I am or if they can trust me to buy the part that I ordered. I figured I'd have to make a trip to pay for it and then go back and pick it up but I may be wrong.

Thanks for the letting me know what the size is. I think I know what heater I need but I'm still not 100% for sure.

Must not be much of a dealer if they don't stock that heater. Even with those engines out of production, I still stock 2 and extra cords at a small single store dealership.
Common item like that, if somebody wanted one and then didn't pick it up, somebody else would want it before long.
Good luck whatever you decide.
