Ford 2000 PTO quit

I have a 1967 Ford 2000 gas tractor with an 8 speed transmission. I was brush hogging and almost done when the PTO shaft quit turning at its normal speed. Turning slow enough that I couldn't finish mowing. Everything else seems fine. Any ideas as to what the issue is?

Is it the PTO or the brush hog? Did you unmount the bush hog and check to see if the PTO itself was turning?

The shaft connecting the PTO to the brush hog slowed and stopped turning. I did not disconnect the brush hog. I would thing that if its in the brush hog, the connecting shaft would continue to turn due to no load from the brush hog or bind up and stall the engine.

There were a couple times mowing through heavy grass that loaded the brush hog down enough to drop the rpm. Did that stress cause some kind of damage? This is almost a 50 year old tractor. Don't know how old the brush hog is.

I'll be back out at the farm in two days so if there's any suggestions ill check while I'm there. I have a service manual but it only shows parts. Doesn't have a troubleshooting section.

Does your 2000 have the live PTO? If so, it could be the clutch.

I'd first take the above suggestion and look carefully at the output shaft, it could be a problem with the shaft itself. That's a long shot, but the first thing to check...

Yep, is it a live pto? (2-stage clutch)?? if so, clutch could be done for.

What model 2000 do you have. The earlier 4 cylinder ones that had rounded hood kinda looking like the N's??

Or the later 3 cylinder one with the squared hood??

IF the early one, it was live PTO. The later one could be either. But if it is transmission driven, you likely broke something and arent just dealing with a worn clutch.
