During the winter, some rats or something got into the wiring in my 3cyl diesel 2000. I want to try to re wire it myself because not all of the wires new replacing... I just don't know the size or rating of the wires I need. Can anyone help me find this? Expierence?

They will not all be the same size. You can use the size wire you are replacing. Hopefully there will be enough of each wire left at the end so you can match up by color and size. A wiring diagram would be very helpful. Look for a service manual on line. It will more than pay for itself.

Work with one damaged loom at a time. Try to work with one wire at a time after you cut the loom open. You will probably find insulation missing on some and whole sections of wire missing on others. If in doubt as to size go bigger, but you will probably be able to tell from the remains. You will need a selection of sizes and colors.

I just want to make sure that I'm not doing something dumb. Hah. All I have to do is find the same size wire as the other one and replace it? Any specific type of wire? Anything to watch for?

Why not just replace the whole harness with new for about 55 bucks? Seems like you'd spend more that that in bain space just figuring out how to repair the old one.

Because this thing isn't in good shape. It's missing peices, I've got one headlight, and I don't even know if it works because it's not hooked up. The gauges don't work and the lights in the dash don't turn on. For gosh sake, I have chains as a lift arm.
The thing is, I'm a senior in high school and I don't have much money, and I don't want to throw what little money I have into something thats gonna break again. Whoah that's a mouthful.

Just use good quality automotive wire and make sure it isn't smaller than what you are replacing. Solder your connections whenever possible. If you have a not too old junk car around you might be able to pull a loom or two out of it and get enough wire. Then it wouldn't cost you anything. If it's a diesel the wireing should be fairly simple. You may find you accidentally fix some of your other issues. Be sure you disconnect the battery before you do anything. If you find a wire you are not sure about skip it until last and it will probably be more obvious. If you get stuck you may be able to find some schematic wiring diagrams on line. Or just get on here and ask detailing what you have and pictures if possible. Good luck.

If $54 is to much then just fix the wire you need to get the starter working and drive it. Don't need much wire on a that tractor to get it to run. By the time you buy wire, crimps, tools, solder... and probably lots of time and problems I suggest that the resto harness would be the way to go.

DITTO:thumbsup:
Diesels need no electricity once started. So if you are just trying to get it to run so you can decide if it is worth continuing .... just wire the started and get it running.

PS - First make sure it has its fluid levels up to snuff first.
