ford 1910, can't find parts

mtnwings,

Did you call Messicks? I'm sure they will give you what is truth with this situation.

Like I said above, the head that is listed in their parts diagram states specifically that the pre chambers are not replaceable. I suspect that the reason they specifically state this is because this is a somewhat common occurrence on this engine. Messicks can tell you for sure.

yes, I did contact Messicks and they explained the situation, this sucks. I am still hoping someone knows of an after market head for this engine or a sure fire fix. In the mean time I will be looking for a reconditioned head at ( Oh my God) $1000.00 plus not including shipping. Most places I call do not have used heads to recondition stating that they are all bought up by owners with the same problem. My questions is: what happens when the re conditioned head I buy burns out the pre chamber in a short time? It is inevitable. Pre chambers are available for other model heads, why is this one different? So many questions. Anyone seen the three cylinder 26 hp water cooled diesel out by Northern Hydraulics? radiators included, a running engine for that price? $ 1300.00 bucks, wonder if it could be hooked up to these little tractors?

We have been through similar problems with these tractors in the past here and I recall that they all ended happy. BUT, you have to educate yourself first rather than hoping for someone on the other end of the phone to give the magic answer. Please don't take that the wrong way.

For example, check the boneyards in the upper Midwest and you have to search for them but gain familiarity first. Search Google or other posts on this board. Search interchangeability of the 1900, 1910, 1920 and maybe the 1700, 1710, 1715 or 1720. Same head? The engine maker also had it's own line of tractors with the same engines and there were a lot of these engines made. What about industrial or marine applications? What about interchangeability of any of these? I had a 1900 and 2110 and there were many similar parts despite three and four cylinder engines and a number of years. I learned by researching.

My point is, you have the dog in the fight and not someone, however good they may be, that does not. Any engine can be fixed because it was built by someone in the first place. Over the years, I have seen "impossible to find parts" for no longer serviced engines sitting on current model products. I have seen a very expensive OEM substitute part made by a machinist for peanuts. But one must first know every inch of that and similar engines and applications. It's just part of the price of admission. Stuff happens.

good advise Mr. Dogs,' I am learning everyday, I have rebuilt many tractors, old Fords and Massy Fergs and parts were always available. There were always old timers around that could answer any questions I might have had and they were always so excited about coming over ( getting away from the old lady) I believe to lend an ear but I never let anyone get their hands dirty, LOL I love wrenching and learning. The frustrating thing here is that this is the newest tractor I have owned and no one knows anything about it around here so I am forced to sit at my desk, not do any work and troll the internet for helpful answers. I have called every salvage yard I could find on the internet, I have called and visited every Ford tractor dealer within reasonable driving distance from me and asked even more questions. I have ordered more any manual or book on this tractor and even recalled many dealers and salvage yards hoping to learn just a little bit more about this engine and why I am having such a hard time finding parts and a head. When I find one I am told, Oh, I am sorry sir, we just sent the last head we had out yesterday. so, frustrated? hoping for more help and answers on this chat room? your dam right I am. I have asked the questions you suggested as to whether parts from a different model engine will work and the answer is always the same, I can't answer that question for you sir, I will look into that and call you back, never a call back. So Mr. Dog, I will keep asking my silly uneducated questions and keep searching the internet in hopes of finding the right parts and the right answers.
Six dogs??? Are you married? Thanks a lot of love to share with man's best friend, my dog died, I only have my hobbies and my tractors. Oh, I am engaged. No, I have not told her the 1910 has a bum motor, she bought it for me.

Can you post a picture? Heads can often be fixed but I'm guessing the burn chamber is likely a different story. I'd start working on a plan to press it out, assuming it was pressed in.

Have you taken the head to an automotive machine shop? Get their opinion on whether it can be repaired.

Personally, on the "nothing to loose" front, I'd take a stab at repairing the crack. If the pre-chamber is removable, so much the better. If not, I'd clean that head and actually use aluminum bronze or similar filler and TIG braze it. (I similarly fixed a crack in an outboard motor cylinder, it worked fine for many seasons!)

I just had a head fixed and they pinned it. The shop has been fixing heads for decades. The owner and guru there said, "nobody welds them anymore." I'm not 100% sure how to take that comment but feel very lucky we have guys like him around. Seems like the chamber could be removed and welded.
