Hello all,

Could use some help diagnosing my beloved little 1710.

It starting running funky a few months back. For a while, it was very intermittent, and I assumed a bad tank of diesel. But it's gotten worse, and right now, can't be moved.

Basically, it acts like it's starved for fuel. I've changed fuel filter, bled system, checked air cleaner, and cleaned fuel cap vent. If I leave it sit for a while, it'll start and run normal for a period - sometimes 30-seconds, sometimes a few hours - before starting to run rough again.

When it's running rough, it'll rev to maybe 2,000 rpms with the throttle wide open, and go quickly downhill from there. If I try to put any load on it to move it, it dies. And so on.

What's my next move? Any help much appreciated.

I have got twin brother or sister to your 1710 with the exception of 2 cylinder VS 3 on yours. From your description it sound a lot like fuel related issue. steps you've taken are alright but, do you know the condition of your injector pump? have you ever changed the oil in the injector pump? take a look at the link below and you may find something useful. operationally the injector pumps are the same between 1700 and 1710 with 1710 having 3 fuel discharge ports.

Thanks JC.

I did change oil in injector pump when I first got the tractor, about 50 hours ago. Not sure if it had ever been done. (it now has 920 hrs).

How do I test the pump? That's a pricey part, isn't it?? I hope it's not that...

Thanks again

Ben,

Good. On testing the pump, although I have not done it on 1700 the test should include pressure and flow (I'e so many unit of voulme at a given running pressure). Pump should not be dead headed as it will damage it depending on the design. On the pump parts breakdown it appears to me that pump piston are cam driven internally off of timing/crank shaft gear. There is a governor assembly mounted on pump shaft to regulate the flow. Before I fiddle with the pump I may loosen the fuel pipe to the injectors while the injector are not disturbed. I will crank the engine for a while hoping to dislodge any contaminant in the line and also verify if I have flow... pressure is another issue. if I have flow and still have problem after I put things together then I look for some injector cleaner suitable for diesel to see if I can may be free up the injector nozzle.

I''ll do non invasive stuff first before I commit deeper.

JC,

P.s. It scares me even to price the pump up:(

I'll still bet on cruddy fuel. Drain the tank. Clean out the tank. I usually put in that foaming spray engine degreaser and wash them out at the local gar wash. Either clean out the fuel lines or just replace them. Replace fuel filter again after cleaning out fuel filter canister throughly. I also usually vacum out injector pump. One time I had a tiny piece of wood much smallet than a 1/10 of a toothpick that was in input to injector pump that was causing all my trouble and blow out the injector lines themselves.

Refill with fresh diesel and put in a good diesel additive. You may be pleasantly suprised. You shouldn't have lost a pump with that many hours although I lost my TN pump at less than 200.

Thanks all.

I took the tank off, drained it, and removed the shutoff valve. Lo and behold... the rubber washer had gotten mashed and was partially blocking the outlet.

she's running like a queen again.

much appreciated,
Ben

That's great Ben, I hate to jump in to things prematurely as one can "dork things Up quick". Got to diagnose the problem first by process of elimination before you get out the big guns. Glad it was a simple fix.:) :)

I'd check the fuel tap and see what kind of flow you are getting.

Deffinately sounds like fuel.

My 7610s did that when i got a bunch of wet fuel..
