I recently purchased a 1988 Ford 1710. The previous owner disclosed to me that when he wants to use the PTO he turns the tractor off, engages the PTO with the lever, starts the tractor up and the PTO works fine. You can turn the PTO off while the tractor is running, but not engage it. The previous owner says it will grind if you try to engage while running. I spoke to a Ford tractor mechanic about this and he says it's probably just an adjustment needed. Unfortunately that mechanic is hours away or I would have him do it. I am going to need to figure this one out, hopefully with the help of some TBN friends.

Has anyone dealt with this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a double clutch, so if it is, clutch halfway down disengages the transmission, clutch all the way down disengages the PTO clutch. If it grinds pushed all the way down, the rubber plug on the side of the bell housing, as long it is not covered by a loader mount, has to be removed to access the clutch assembly. The PTO pressure plate can be accessed and is adjusted here. If you need the procedure at this point, I can look it up or someone that has done it recently here on TBN might be able to assist.

Thanks Tractor Tech, I will be taking a look at it over the weekend.
