Hi there,
I just picked up a Ford 1700 not sure what year (79-82?) 4x4 with duall 155 front loader. I also found a good by on a Land Pride 1248 rotary cutter and 48" Henry j rotavator. I'm hoping to use it to keep brush and weeds down around the property and till up the garden and arena. From what I've read i need an over-run clutch for running these implements due to the fact my tractor is not equipt with a live PTO. Is this correct? and what size would i need? If so could you explain how these work. I've also seen another type of pto shaft clutch which consists of springs and plates. What are those used for? Thanks

Mine has the same kind of clutch and PTO. I've run all of those implements for 32 years with no issues. The implement will come with either a slip clutch or sheer pin. Tractor should be fine.

2nd Fawken's input. Your PTO disengages (is no longer coupled to the transmission/drive axles) when the clutch is depressed, the implement will not continue to drive the wheels like on the older Fords.

1700 does have an internal ORC, no need to put external at the pto final shaft . The momentum of rotary cutter will not be able to push the tractor forward. Yes, your tractor does not have " Live PTO". It has transmission driven pto, clutch and the torque to PTO stops (it will continue to turn due to any momentum left, does not have a pto brake). Pto engaged and tractor in neutral and your pto spins while tractor stationary. The last item your are talking is a "slip clutch", that you might have in a tiller or brush hog in lieu of shear pin. The purpose of the clutch is to slip once your implement such as tiller comes to a dead stop hitting bolder and such. At that point the clutch slips to dissipate the energy without damage to drive terrain. Slip clutch bolt should not be too tight, better slips than break something same as a lighter shear pin vs for example grade 8 bolt use as shear pin.

Thanks for all your input. Much appreciated. Now all i need is some rain so i can get on it and start workin without starting a fire!
