Hello, l own a Ford 1700 tractor, nice tractor but its eating glow plugs. I get about 4 uses out of them and they burned out. All electrical is good and ignition switch checks out. Would there be a possibility of something inside the head that's worn l am using l believe the correct plugs sba185366010 . Any advise would be appreciated. Geo

it looks like they are getting too much voltage, and overheating!. or they are just staying on too long, and burning out.. I don't know what voltage these are supposed to get. it don't have anything to do with something inside the head being worn, though.

Thank you for the advice. Getting about 10 volts to the plug when activated and no power to them when engine is running.

the tractor is decades old, so, if there was a common problem with the glow plugs, it would have been mentioned on the web somewhere, but there is no mention of it..

If it's similar to a 1720 then the only components the power supply to the glow plugs goes through is the ignition switch and the safety start switch. Makes me wonder if there is an intermittent short in the ignition switch or safety start switch that is energizing the glow plugs while the engine is running.

Is the safety start switch attached to the clutch pedal? Just wondering if the short only happens when the tractor is being used as opposed to just sitting in neutral and running.

Could probably be tested by hooking up the VOM to the glow plug with the ignition in the RUN position, have someone watch it while you manipulate the clutch, transmission, PTO .... or whatever the start safety switch is hooked up to.

There may have been a safety at one time but its not there now. May have been removed by the previous owner I did have the tractor idling and checked with a dc volt meter at the plug didnt notice any voltage. Unless it happens periodically.

I didnt mess with the clutch or try throttling more. I agree not much about glow plugs burning out on the 1700. The plugs are pricey at $14 a piece, Spend more on plugs than i do on diesel fuel.

Does it have a glow plug timer or just the key switch to heat them up, The old chevy diesel would cook the glow plugs if the timer was messing up, anything longer than one minute ...

It just has the the ignition switch, turn key to left and glow plugs are activated l only hold it for about 15 seconds. Also when the key is turned to the right to crank the engine the plugs are also activated. Only in the run position they are off
