Got a slow leak at the lift cylinder collar on a Ford 1700 front loader. I was advised to tighten it but this only made it drip faster. I'm assuming a seal is gone. What is involved in unscrewing this and replacing a seal? It looks like an original Ford loader (nothing on it that identifies what it is, including on the cylinders unfortunately).

These are probably the VR style fabric seals. They take about 4 or 5 of them stacked on top of one another. You will have to disassemble the cylinder to replace them.

Here's my reply to a similar post not too long ago:

That cylinder should have a threaded gland. It uses U-cups for both the piston and gland seals. It is necessary to remove the elbow from the base end port and insert as large a drift punch as will fit into the port AND a drilling in the side of the round piston nut. Once the nut is trapped, the rod is rotated, loosening the piston and relieving compression on the U-cup piston seals. It may not be absolutely necessary to loosen the piston to get the rod out of the bore, but the piston MUST be installed loose and tightened in place at reassembly. And loosening the piston as described is a good way to free it without damage to the O.D.

Hope this helps

My past experience is that you might do better to take the cylinder off of the tractor and take it to a heavy equipment or farm implement repair shop. There are a few tricks and tools for this sort of job that the average guy might not be aware of. Damaging a rod or cylider can run into some serious money. Be sure to properly support the loader before disconnecting any hoses, the law of gravity is still in effect. Roger
