How does the fan pulley mount to the water pump? The pulley assembly on my tractor has some lateral slack. Is there a way to correct this? Is it an issue that I need to correct? I see what appears to be a set/locking bolt under the water pump housing where the fan pulley mounts. Will appreciate any assistance?

It appears to me that the water pump pulley is integral to it when you buy new or reman. There is a round disk holder that the water pump fan is attached by 4 bolts. I have never taken it off. Can't see how pulley is held on the pump shaft. Lateral slack means the seal is about to go. do yo have any water leak? I noticed the locking bolt as well. I wonder if that would allow the pump shaft to be withdrawn after impeller is removed. Would like to see the pics of the inside if yo decide to dissemble and attempt overhaul.

Thanks for your reply JC. I was hoping that you would know. Looks like I should start looking for a water pump. No water leaks yet. Also dealing with what appears to be a stripped mounting bolt for the fuel injector pump and it's the one on the back side that is the hardest to get to. It won't tighten, thus allowing a slow leak of the pump oil. Otherwise the tractor runs fine. I'll let you know if I come up with anything on the water pump. Any suggestions on a source for a replacement water pump? J

There are several Fleabay sources for the water pump than can be had on the cheap. About $85 is not too bad. I looked at the parts breakdown and I would guess the seal is rubber that can be found or matched . If you decide to buy from the sources below there is no charge for the core. It would be great if you do a post-mortem on the pump to see if it is overhaulable. Pictures would be great. Can you not re-tap the hole to put a different bolt? make sure to put witness mark on the pump body and the mounting surface on timing gear cover. Can you show where the pump leaks with a picture. If it is not stripped bad, depending where it is you can put some RTV on the bolt, add a few strands of very tiny copper wire and try to screw it in. it might jam enough to keep it from leaking and in the same time allow you to open it even after the RTV completely cures. RTV would do fine with oil and diesel.

Well, the water pump went out yesterday. Noticed major leaking after running a hour or so; shut her down before any overheating developed. Not sure that I will tackle it myself. I know of a mechanic who works only on older tractors. Will probably take it to him for water pump replacement and also let him look at the injector pump mounting bolt problem. Will let you know how everything turns out. Thanks, for you help. Jerel

Sorry about that .. but as they say "It's cost of doing business!!". It is not too difficult if you decide to do it yourself as you have plenty of room to get to all the bolts. Got to cleanup mating surfaces well if you decide to do it yourself. It does have a flat gasket. I'd use indian head gasket sealant or equivalent to be on the safe side. obviously yo need to drain the system below the pump,I'd do it right the at the block drain plug. alternator mounting bolts are very accessible to loosen and take the belt off. I'd like to see the pics of the old pump if you decide to do a dissection. What;s wrong with the mounting bolt issue on the inj pump?

I may change it myself. We exchanged thoughts last month about a injector pump mounting bolt that is either broken or stripped and won't tighten, thus allowing some leakage of the pump oil. It is on the back side and no easy way to get to it without removing more stuff than I really want to tackle right now. So far I have just been keeping close tabs on the oil level and refilling as needed. I'll try to get pictures for you if I do anything myself. Thanks, Jerel

If I remember correctly, the bolts on the injector pump is a bolt and nut. You need to remove the front cover to tighten the bolts. Parts manual may show it. Bad way of doing it. Makes hard to adjust if you ever have to.

You're right if the nut Jerel is taking about is what I pictured below. What I would have done is short of taking the cover off would be to grab the nut with a locking pliers pull and try to tighten and hope it grabs on the inside. I'm not sure if that is the nut causing the leak for him.
