That system is different from most. Every tractor I have used (older MF, Deere and Allis tractors and somewhat more modern Kubotas) has had either an electromechanical system (shut the key off and the tractor shuts off) or a fuel shutdown knob (pull out the knob and the tractor shuts off)

I don't know what I said different than you. Solenoid is a electromechanical device or you shut the flow off by lowering the throttle or in your case have a knob to again kill the fuel delivery just the same. What did yo mean by "That system is different from most"? I did not get that part.

Very few diesels have a system where you shut the engine off by lowering the throttle. Most use (or used) either a solenoid or a "shutoff knob"

yeah, there's a few ways.

I have a yanmar that you dump the throttle to kill. some mechaincal diesels with the ful kill pull knob, and yet others with solenoid kill.

you see the same 3 setups on heavy equipment of different vintages.

one way or another.. you are stopping fuel.. etc.

Wanted to bump this thread off to see if OP ever got lights to work. I recently took in my foster tractor -- a '94 1620 -- and it has a ridiculous light switch (well, to me, I've operated lots of vehicles, but am new to ag tractor world) which is round with two pivoting discs stacked on each other. Bottom one is supposed to be basic on/off while top one, according to manual, is supposed to do headlight/flashers. By trying all possible combinations, I have gotten the headlights to turn on once (but not after that) and have never gotten any other lights on.

The wiring diagram is on the NH site, and I have looked at that; am wondering if there is a simple way to figure out if the switch is broken (my strong suspicion). A way that might be more efficient than playing with the multimeter and blowing something up, heh.

I bought a used 1600 4wd and was wondering if anyone had a wiring diagram. The tractor runs great, but the key won't shut off the engine when turned to the off position. The headlights or rear lights don't work either. It will heat the glow plugs with the key, it just won't shut the engine off. It looks like it has a replacement alternator and there is only 1 wire connected from the alternator. I am trying to get a diagram to see how it should be wired and to try to get the key and lights working. Having to cut off the throttle and pull up on the gas peddle to kill the engine gets old. Any help is appreciated.

I own a Ford 1600 as well. The proper way to shut down your tractor is to reduce your throttle lever completely. The engine should shut off, then turn your key to the off position and remove it.
I too am interested in a wiring diagram. My headlights worked fine until we replaced the hood after painting. Now I cannot seem to get the wiring correct.
