Tractor
Ford 1520 bought in 1984
1984 Ford 1520 has begun making a noise at the front of the tractor (by my ear it sounds like it is coming from there) near the fan and radiator when rpms are increased. Hard to describe. Not a knocking. Not continuous. Something maybe rubbing. The fan doesn't seem to be hitting anything. When idling or minimal acceleration, there is no noise. I imagine my description isn't very helpful. Have a video but must be too big (68 MB) Will try an audio only today. If I put my file in an accessible dropbox.com location, will anyone take the time to check it out?

I would start by checking the water pump/fan bearings for play and also the alternator. You can even take the belt off and check if the engine will make that noise. Run it enough just to check the noise as the water pump and fan won't be running and you don't want to overheat the engine.

Thanks for the reply. I took the sides down and looked closely and the front. The sound was more concentrated on the left side where the alternator is. Thought maybe it was going bad. I don't recall them making noise like that when going out though. I thought one of the pulleys looked liked it was wobbling just a bit. Killed the motor and tried to wriggle the pulley but it didn't have any play in it. There was a extra little piece of metal (by design) on the pulley that made it look like it was wobbling. I turned the fan by hand and it did not rub. Nothing else was loose anywhere except the fan belt. It was really loose. Tightened it up and no more noise. Glad it was something simple. Was able to do what I needed to do today.
ptsg - did you use the dropbox link? Just like to know if that is a useful way to post big videos.

I'm glad you figured it out. Thanks for updating us.

My guess is that the belt was slightly loose and since the alternator will only start actually charging at higher RPMs, the belt was slipping under the load and was making the weird noises.

Yes. I did use the Dropbox link. Worked just fine. Some times I do the same thing with Dropbox or I just upload to Youtube and set the video as Non listed.
