Hi,

I have a, formally very reliable, 1984 Ford 1310. It has always started without issues. I started it today, no problem. Turned it off, ate lunch, came back turned the key, it made clunk (as if the starter was engaging), then nothing. Charged the battery, check the connection on the starter/solenoid, zippo! No lights.

It there a fusable link, or similar?

I took off the starter, it spins. Turned of the motor by hand, no problem

Any ideas and/or a wiring diagram would be appreciated!!

Thanks, John

Have you tried jump starting it? What about a multi meter on the battery? Should read 12.6v or so. I think no less than 12v. If your battery is weak, it can be a bad battery or a bad alternator. That's where I would start since you have no lights.

Battery is good, reads 12.7 volts. I'll to bump the starter.

So, I can't bump the starter.

This relay is on the starter, I'm jumping between the small white wire to the heavy battery line.....nothing.

Sounds like you may need a new solenoid, or possibly a whole new starter. I have a place close by me that rebuilds my starters for me, the last one was off my Case tractor, and I think it cost me $60 for a rebuild and $25 for a new solenoid. Have you had any problems with the starter such as a slow crank or maybe having to turn the key a few times before it kicked in? BTW, welcome to TBN!

Thanks for the welcome, I've been a reader for a while.

It was cranking fine, so I guess you are right....new solenoid will be the next step.

I have the same type tractor and it wouldn't start after cranking fine all morning. IT done this about a week ago and the front end was kindly uphill and didn't make but a quiet click between the switch and starter. When you turn the key the little red warning light is plenty bright as usual, but iit won't do nothing this time after letting it sit a while like last time it done this. My starter needed tuning up for the last couple years, as I might have to try it a few times to engage the flywhel fully. If battery is good and neutral switch seems to be ok what would cause it to make just a small click sound toward my feet?? ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED BECAUSE ITS IN THE WOODS WITH A BIG LOG IN THE BUCKET--THANKS--THIS IS MY FIRST POST AS A NEW MEMBER AND I ALSO HAVE BEEN READING YA'LLS POSTS TOO FOR A WHILE--TIME TO JUMP IN

Roundbaby did you see any smoke when it was cranking? the battery needs to at least 12.5V to crank your tractor. Sounds like your solenoid is not energizing your starter. You likely have two big wires on your solenoid, one from battery and one feeds the starter motor. With tractor in neutral jump the two terminals. If the starter jumps the solenoid is likely culprit.

If battery has a bad cell it will show good voltage, but when load applied it will drop sharply. Need to load test it to see if it is good. Put a volt meter on it, turn the key to start it or try the lights and see what happens. Could be internal battery problem. just a thought.

I tried yesterday to check white wir that comes from ignition switch to selenoid with test light while turning key and didn't light up. This wire plugs onto the small metal plug on selenoid. I tried to crank the tractor by taking screwdriver and touching both terminles and the starter did spin one time, then i could see sparks trying again but starter did not turn no more. HOW DO YOU TELL IF IT IS IGNITION SWITCH OR NEAUTRAL SWITCH? I saw a white junction plug-in near where the ignition wire plugs onto the selenoid switch --would it have a fuse in it or is there a blowed fuse that would cause this? THIS FORD 1310 TRACTOR DONE THIS SAME THING A WEEK AGO AND IT WAS PARKED UPHILL JUST LIKE THIS TIME. I'm going to get my dad to pull the tractor out of the woods with his truck up to the house where i can check on things easier. ANY SUGGESTIONS OF HOW TO BYPASS OR TROUBLESHOOT IGNITION SWITCH OR NEAUTRAL SWITCH?? P.S. I 'VE HAD TROUBLE WITH STARTER NOT ENGAGING GOOD FOR A WHILE NEED TO GET THAT FIXED TOO--THANKS FOR ANY HELP.
