For those who have a wood burner in the front room, Best accessory?

I have a 50ft heavy duty hose hooked to the pressure tank and rolled up down stairs, that in less than a minute can be run out to deliver water outside to the roof, inside to the attic, and two other floors inside.

Ditto. Mine is on a reel above the slop sink in the garage. Its amazing how much fire a green line can knock down if you can handle getting close enough.

With all the talk about sifting coals from ashes, I was set to make something out of an old ash shovel. Then I came across this on sale for $67. Comes with a scraper for pulling ashes off of the back wall. They should be arriving tomorrow. The holes in the grate look a little small to me, but we will see. USA made in a small metal shop Nevada City, CA. I was thinking more fork style since I get a fair amount of the crunchy lava type chunks, but I see Moss said he drilled holes so this should work.

I have 6hp gas pump with a 75 ft discharge hose and a suction hose connected to the Pacific Ocean. Never used it for this purpose, but it is there. I just hope I don't suck up a geoduck and plug things up when I need to put a house fire out.

Well, if you suck up a geoduck and it ends up on your burning house it oughta be done by the time the fire is out. I think though that you would need a darn big hose to suck the shell up. Actually, by the time the clam made it through the pump it would be hard to identify.

For cleaning ash from our wood burner I bought a Snow Joe vacuum cleaner made just for this purpose. It works great, doesn't fill the room with dust. It has very good filtration which makes it kinda slow sucking everything up. Still faster than any other method though. And clean. Really clean. I love it. Amazon.com
It looks like there are others on Amazon that may be better. I dunno. But mine works great.

Those ash vacuums are a game changer over the dusty ash bucket and shovel. And the steel canister and fiberglass filters are fire proof, so sucking up hot coals is no problem. I just make sure to not let the coals sit inside and empty it in the garden area.

I use bagged coal, a 40# bag fits in a five gallon bucket. I bring in a bucket or two at a time and a bucket will do one or two days each.

It did work well. Pictures below were from my first attempt doing it with my phone in my left hand. I shoveled out the left side of the 3rd picture (which was mostly ash plus tiny coals), then made one more pass back the other way without holding the phone and it did a good job. Ordinarily I would wait longer for the coals to burn down, but that can take another day or more (my stove is an insert, so it is well insulated). Doing it this way with the coals hotter, the flue was drafting enough to keep the ash cloud contained and up the flue as you indicated earlier and I was back to burning wood the same day. So, this was my best Christmas present (to myself even) this year.
