Seems like overkill. Crumpled newspaper, a bit of kindling and a normal match works for me.Mag torch and pine cones for an almost instant fire start.
You mustn't use your stove much. I need to empty my ash drawer a couple times a week in the winter, maybe once a week in spring/fall when we just use it to take the chill off in the evening. So many people talk about collecting the ash out of the stuff so often. I try to collect the ash as little as possible!
The ash sends particulates floating all over every time you scoop them. I prob collect my ash once a month or so with daily fires. Lots of ash will bury the hot coals in the night so you can more easily rev the fire back up in the morning.
I wait till the firebox is cold, and there is a lot less ash/dust that gets airborn.Agree that the dust gets everywhere, just learned to live with it and try to keep it down as much as possible.
I use a stove once or twice a day for the winter and it is our only source of heat, so no. I could be over estimating how often I scoop ash.You mustn't use your stove much. He may have a very efficient stove that burns everything up. Ours is pretty efficient. Hardly any ash.Seems like overkill. Crumpled newspaper, a bit of kindling and a normal match works for me.

Nice catch Duds. We built our home 11 years ago. I have a thread on here documenting the build. The reflection in the stove glass looks like a very beautiful timber frame!
Overkill......Maybe. But easy is easy regardless of the approach. The pine cones are my kindling. Plus it works great if the wood is slightly damp from rain or snow as well.Seems like overkill. Crumpled newspaper, a bit of kindling and a normal match works for me.
What is this 'newspaper' you speak of?Seems like overkill. Crumpled newspaper, a bit of kindling and a normal match works for me.
