Mag torch and pine cones for an almost instant fire start.
Seems like overkill. Crumpled newspaper, a bit of kindling and a normal match works for me.
So many people talk about collecting the ash out of the stuff so often. I try to collect the ash as little as possible!

The ash sends particulates floating all over every time you scoop them. I prob collect my ash once a month or so with daily fires. Lots of ash will bury the hot coals in the night so you can more easily rev the fire back up in the morning.
You mustn't use your stove much. I need to empty my ash drawer a couple times a week in the winter, maybe once a week in spring/fall when we just use it to take the chill off in the evening.
Agree that the dust gets everywhere, just learned to live with it and try to keep it down as much as possible.

I wait till the firebox is cold, and there is a lot less ash/dust that gets airborn.
It helps that I can let the fire go out in the main stove, and start the fire the cookstove for heat when it is real cold. Both stoves are capable of heating the house.
Planned on it today as the turkey will be in the oven, so the main stove is going to get cold for ash removal. I burn mostly oak so I do get my share of ash.

I use a stove once or twice a day for the winter and it is our only source of heat, so no. I could be over estimating how often I scoop ash.

I certainly don't try to get ash out when there are still hot coals. I wait till the stove is cold and I scoop with as LITTLE disturbance as possible. It makes a big difference with the flying ash.

He may have a very efficient stove that burns everything up. Ours is pretty efficient. Hardly any ash.

I find that if I clean out the ashes when the stove is hot there's still a draft and most ash/dust just goes up the pipe, not out into the room. We have an ash door on the bottom of the stove, but many time's I'll just pull the ash drawer out and scoop into that VS opening the floor door.

The reflection in the stove glass looks like a very beautiful timber frame!
Nice catch Duds. We built our home 11 years ago. I have a thread on here documenting the build.

Overkill......Maybe. But easy is easy regardless of the approach. The pine cones are my kindling. Plus it works great if the wood is slightly damp from rain or snow as well.

What is this 'newspaper' you speak of? :ROFLMAO:

Just kidding, but having worked at one for 30 years before printing was outsourced, not too many folks get them anymore (including me). So kindling is now the main means for us to start our fires.
