Polecat, Do us a favor an hit your cap lock key. Some folks find all caps to be annoying, it's the equivalent to shouting. JJT

Just make sure you detail how easy (or not) it is to take those knots apart. 'Gonna do some shear legs and gin poles as well? I've got the top gear to an old quarry gin pole - center pin is about 2 1/2" each side - heavy metal!

cool on the gin pole!!! nope jist gong to go into basic rigging.. bowlines, square knots, cloves and some reverse halfs(half hitches )and stuff like that ...what i'm planning on doing is tearing down 4 trees at one time with a "four part block set up and my cut"..roots and all... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How 'bout that animation /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A great book on knots is available from Boy Scout stores. It costs $1.25, and has a wealth of knot info in it; dozens and dozens of well diagramed knots

I never knew any knots till I worked at the Fire Dept for a few years. It is amazing what you can do with variations of a figure-8, whether it is sunny and clear at 3 in the afternoon, or wet, cold, and raining at 3 in the morning /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thank u so much R>>N!!! that is going to be a great time saver 4 me as i was going to have to take dozens of pics just to illustrate how to tie a particular knot!!!!!4 all of u that think u know knots /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I sincerely wonder what u think is the GRANDADDY OF ALL OF THE BEST OF ALL THE KNOTS!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
AND WE SHALL SOON C WHO KNOWS WHAT BY YER ANSWERS!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Let me give you all a little background on myself.....
I am closing in on 40 rather too rapidly but i have been either been doing tree work or powerline work all of my adult life...

I personally think that if u know how to tie a correct knot it can literally save your life ...and most possibly the lives of others....!!!!!It's not just the knot but the use of them and to know the possibilities and the different circumstances that u r in ..also!!!!

Are u in a very serious "LIFESAVING PREDICAMENT"!!!!!

DO U NOT HAVE ENOUGH ROPE TO SAVE A FRIEND'S LIFE!!!!!!!!

BUT YOU HAVE DIFFERENT SIZES of rope and need to link them together to reach the.."victim"......!!!

That is what this thread is really all about!!! The ability to not only know yer knot's but to properly judge which one is right for the moment!!!!!!

I am truly sorry but I did not git to put some of the thing's i wanted to show u guy's in action and into use today as the ......
"better half"...came home last eve with a broken down vehicle!!!! A seperated muffler!!! She has heard my scoldings enuff to know that u do not jist try to make it home as it can literally cost u $1000's of dollars by jist driving home with a hanging muffler!!!!! She has had many a chance to learn a great knot trick or 2!!! But she does not think that they are even remotely that important!!! At least she knows better not to show up with anything hanging under the vehicle!!! If she had listened to my advice ...she would not have even shown up all covered from head to toe with dirt and road grit as it would have been so easy to have solved her predicament!!

THIS IS A TRUE LIFE EXAMPLE AS TO HOW WHEN SHE SHOWED UP WITH(THANK GOD!!) HER EXHAUST SYSTEM TIED UP !!!!!!!!............How she wouldn't have even had to git under her truck...............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The following is THE EXHAUST HANGING PROBLEM AFTER I SET HER "STRING OFF"......AND HOW IT LOOKED!!!!

All a bowline does is put a loop in the end of a rope that even under almost rope breaking tension ...the knot can b simply untied and undone without any damage whatsoever to the rope!!!!! This is a really simple example of i used a bowline to cinch up totally.... around her vehicle...and raise her muffler system in order to bring it 1 mile down the road to git it fixed!!!!

The first of many ways to rig and git away with things that would cost the "average and ordinary " person a few $100's to have it towed!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Will restart this string in greater depth soon !!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The previous pic was the problem...after i let her "rigging down and untangled the twine that she used to save her exhaust system!!!!...I have showed her many a times how to tie knots!!! but not only did she choose to do it her own "politically correct way!!!she also chose to use some 1/4" twine that she had in the vehicle instead of the brand new coils of 3/8" mountain climbing rope that she had in the back!!!!"...

She literally risked her $300.00 exhaust system and possibly the lives of others and herself jist to not un wrap her high dollar rope!!!...When she showed up i was jist glad to b able to not to have to replace the whole exhaust system!!!...she hit a few high spots on her way home but it was sincerely a miracle that all she did was jist scratch the exhaust system!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

How childish..and i will not give her credit for tying it up with kite string when she had the "right stuff" in the back of the truck!!!!

The following is the way that i showed her how to tie it up
!!!!!!!!!!way out of the way...a proper working bowline!!
with two or three reverse half hitches to keep it taught...this pic shows 2 reverse halves!!

The next pic is how u can actually tie a bowline and use what is called a "quick release reverse half hitch" to snug it tight and keep the load temporarily but when u get to your short term destination all you u hav eot do is just pull the "quick release" and the rope will literally instantly release all the tension and load that u put on it to begin with!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is a really cool way to send stuff up a rope to a buddy on a roof or a pole and all he hs to do is grab the load and give the tail a quick yank and the knot is immediately undone!!..instantaneously!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
