Food Plots?

I see this term used frequently. It seems it is used interchangeably in describing tracts of land developed for the attraction and/or sustaining wildlife or in describing a tract of land for growing food crops.

Is there a line of distinction?

I'm just curious.

I associate "food plots" with areas planted for wildlife consumption. I don't recall hearing that term in reference to gardens, fields, etc. used to grow crops (agronomic or horticultural) that are destined for either human or domestic-animal consumption.

Thanks for the clarification Steve. I, also wonder, at times, if its for animals or humans. Probably because they are an uncommon item in this neck of the woods. It would be difficult to attract deer, etc to a food plot here - the area around here is all alfalfa, field hay and grain crops.

I am in central Wisconsin and food plots around here are very popular. We have lots of farm land around here, more so in the southern 2/3 of the state, but people still plant food plots. Its done to basically attract deer or other wildlife into the area for hunting. While wildlife will still eat off farm fields, alot of them like to eat from food plots in the woods as they are surrounded by the wooded area instead of being out in the wide open. It does draw the animals in to. It works well in the the large wooded areas better as there usually isnt a better food source very close by.

To my knowledge, a food plot is the term used to describe an area planted to attract wildlife. In some states it's illegal to hunt over these areas, but here in Texas, it's common practice.

We live in a large Agricultural area,lots of corn ,soybeans alfalfa ect.Most are harvested before winter.
I have about ten acres of food plots,they are cut down in the spring and replanted.Do they feed the wildlife,for sure.

Yep its a crop of anything specifically planted to attract wildlife.

There legal to hunt over here in this state, heck throwing corn onthe ground and hunting deer over it is legal here!

In Virginia, food plots are perfectly legal. Throwing corn, etc on the ground before a hunt is not. Guess the difference is the deer have 24/7 access to a food plot but not "bait".
