My wife has been filling out the income tax form and wanted to know whether a fifty pound block of trace mineral is food or a chemical. She says there's no blank for condiment. Which is it?

I don’t claim to be a cpa but since you wouldn’t eat it directly a chemical seems more fitting.

It's a food. Just like salt blocks, molasses topping for silage, range cubes, etc.

Food is ahead two to one.

Food is ahead 2 to 1 so it must be food. She said they had a separate spot to list fertilizer. I wonder what they would call a chemical, maybe herbicide?

I believe the Schedule F simply says "chemicals". I lump all pesticides, herbicides, etc., in that category.

Table salt is definitely a food, meant to be consumed, in spite of the fact that it is technically an inorganic chemical, NaCl. If it's meant to be eaten, it's a food...if you use it in the laboratory, it's a chemical.

I've never saw any livestock do anything but eat it. :)

But I guess if I throw it on the sidewalk to melt the ice it would become a chemical.

I'm most definitely not going to sort that detailed when doing my taxes..... :)

As a recovering cpa, I can tell you the irs doesn't care how you categorize it as long as you can supply an invoice if you get audited.
