Foaming Diesel

When filling my 5 gal. container at the station today with #2 off road, it foamed so much it came out of the container opening when i was still pumping the diesel.
Is this normal? What cause the foaming?

Diesel will foam if agitated or splashed (like pumping at the station), there is nothing abnormal about it. Let it settle down and fill the can the rest of the way.

More than once my VW has "burped" down my leg onto my shoe at the fuel station. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Especially when trying to get that last little bit into the tank to make the next $. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When filling the New Holland we put the auto nozzle as far in the neck of the tank that we can and then fill the fuel tank as fast as the nozzle will permit.

When the diesel foams near the top, and it will, the nozzle shuts down immediately. Then we reset the nozzle to the slowest setting to automatically top-off the rest of the tank.

Diesel always foams when your pumping it on the fast side.

I concur with the others. You just have to be a little patient when you get towards the top.

Thanks for all the replies - guess I was just in too much of a hurry - used to pumping gas. Kubota is my first diesel, and have learned much from the good people on TBN.
