1942 Farmall A
Hello,
After 18 years I have been reunited with an old(1942) Farmall A. I used to run one back on a farm and would do minor repair to it. The model I have just purchased was restored in 1998. The previous owner claimed to have put only 10 hours on it since. What I am wondering is what are all the fluids, and amounts of each, that this model needs, i.e. engine/gear oil, radiator fluid, transmission fluid, etc... I am trying to figure out how to take care of this machine and I'm having trouble finding good sources. I can't seem to find solid answers to many questions in the manual.

the I&T service manual will give you good maintenance info.

figure on using a UTF fluid which can be found at a farm store or walmart.

as for oil.. use a weight based on engine wear and climate. for most temperate areas, I like to run a C rated 15w40 oil in all my oldies.

Well, I run 10w-30 or 30w in the engine. Used to run 30w in the summer, but I use just 10w-30 anymore. I figure oil in 1942 compared to now, well, doesn't compare. Gear oil in the tranny..... 85W90 or something like that. It must be OK, tractor has been in the family since 1942...... All original engine parts, except for rings, and tranny is still smooth.
