FLUID CAPACITY OF 1700

I would certainly be on the cheap skate side. I'm certainly not an oil or lubricant guru. I personally use the Rotella 15w40 with my Yanmar and Mobil with my car and Walmart Super tech brand with my truck. I have used quite a few different brands down through the years. I use the Mobil with the car because that is what the dealership put in it. I believe frequency of oil and filter change is very important and can somewhat be based on engine condition. If an engine is worn and got a little blow by I would recommend oil changes a little more frequent. The oils pick up the blow by contaminants so it is sort of like changing out the dishwater when it starts getting dirty.

Well, I went to a couple stores... and ended up buying 10w-40 oil and Dex/Merc transmission fluid.

Walmart was out of the 5w-40 synthetic and I searched in vain for a transmission fluid that said "universal" or "hydraulic/transmission" oil.

Walmarts in East Texas stock Super Tech transmission/hydrulic fluid in 2 gallon jugs. Altho the transmission fluid will probably be ok I think it is only recommended for the powershift models.

Darn Walmart here only had quarts of transmission fluid (everything's bigger in Texas, right?) and none that said transmission/hydraulic fluid.

What you're looking for is a "universal tractor fluid" or "hydraulic/transmission fluid" or something similar to that. It will say somewhere on the container that it is compatible with, or meets specifications for a whole list of things. Look for JD303 (John Deere 303), J20A,B,C,D or IH Hy-tran. There are some other specs that are equivalent, but those should usually be there. I know some people have run ATF in their machines, and say it works better in the cold, but I'm ignorant about the comparitive chemistries of UTF to ATF. Also, it never gets cold around here, really. I'm more concerned with hot weather protection than cold weather.

This is available at Napa, they have a house brand that is equivalent. Any tractor dealer will have it, too.

I don't know how much your YM1700 will take, but it will be around 5 gallons. Be careful when you open up the drain plug, in other words! Have a bucket and a pan ready to catch it all if you're changing it out. Make sure to clean the screen as well.

Check to make sure the 10W-40 is rated for diesel engines. The bottles should say API CJ-4 rated or something. API CI-4 or CI-4 plus is good too (some may argue better.) 15W40 is the standard conventional diesel oil. It should be available everywhere. Wal-Mart's Supertech brand is actually about as good as anything else, and is usually cheaper. Before the 5W40 was so close to conventional oil in price, I used 15W40 from whomever had it on sale in all the things I own.

284 -- I was thinking I might have walked away with the wrong things... Thanks for the NAPA link. I checked with them, and they would have to order it for me. I just checked Tractor Supply, and they have the right stuff in a 2 gal container -- YM1700 takes 1 gal. It's a little farther, but I don't want to put the wrong stuff in.

I guess I should have read the whole thread. Aaron at Hoye says the YM1700 takes 4 gallons of transmission/hydraulic fluid and 5 quarts of engine oil with a filter change. That's definitive in my book.

Darn it, darn it, darn it... it's been one of those days. Somehow I got in my head that it took 4 QUARTS of transmission/hydraulic fluid, so I drove all the way out to the local Tractor Supply and bought a 2 gallon jug, thinking I was getting plenty to do this tonight. I didn't figure it out until I came in a saw your post as the old oil was draining. Oh well, the best laid plans and all that. :( Guess I'll finish the job tomorrow.
