Tractor
Case IH 275
Hello folks. Thanks for the warm welcome in the new member section.

First, I am trying to decide IF this tractor I just purchased is worth me rebuilding the whole engine and installing a clutch kit.
I do not know the actual condition of the rest of the tractor other than the engine.
Maybe I should sell it for salvage, or part it out?

Here's this tractor's story:
The PO didn't take the best care of it and left it broke down beside a creek.
A few months ago here in NC we received a couple months of rain every single day. The creek and fully submerged tractor was at flooded for a few days.
I was told the reason it broke beside the creek was because the clutch went out at the creek.
It was fully submerged, and maybe for a few days. It's been sitting untouched since then for about 2.5 to 3 months.

Its got 2100 hours total. 1 of the pistons was rusted stuck (it's free now).
Overall the rest of the tractor *looks* in good condition from the exterior.

I purchased it a month ago, and intended to install a clutch and do some engine work, or rebuild the whole engine.
Since then, I have torn down the whole engine and tractor front.
The block, crank, head, pistons and rods are all at the machine shop waiting for my decision.

Engine Rebuild:
The engine is in decent shape.
There was rust on the cylinder walls and crank, but they can be salvaged.
Pistons look good, block is good, head looks good, and it's ready to be rebuild.
It needs a valve job, and everything to be cleaned, surfaced and mic and rebuilt.
Total cost of parts, machine work, and my "free" labor is $ 2,000 for engine and clutch.

Remainder of the tractor:
I have not drained any fluid other than engine oil. Have not looked into the transmission, axles, or power train.

Today I was told by a local tractor dealer's service-man that his guess, was that he is sure the transmission, axles, etc. has water in them
and could be rusted pretty bad.

He suggested I find neutral, and pull off the gear shift cover and inspect under it for damage.

Is there anything else I can look into and check for damage to decide if this is worth rebuilding the engine and keeping this tractor?
I want to find out if anything else is damaged and will need work or parts before moving forward with the engine.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I did read this thread:
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/66619-flooded-tractor.html
And was told by the service-man that I might be able to get away with changing the fluids, running it, changing again, running it, and then change again 1 or 2 more times.....??

Thanks for anyones insight and help here.

John would it bring $4K at a farm equipment auction if running?

If you are looking for a project I say go for it. If you 'need' a tractor then perhaps not.

Hi Gale, thanks for the suggestion and input. I think it would bring $3,500 to $4,000 with a newly rebuilt engine at a private sale, but only ~ $2,000 to $3,000 at a farm equipment auction. That's based on what I have seen for sale locally.

I agree about the project part.... and we do need a tractor. Even if I got this running well, I would only keep it for a season or 2 to be sure it's running well and then trade or sell it for something more common.

Other locals familiar with tractors are suggesting I purchase something else more common.

How old is this tractor and what is the HP? Just curious on which IH 275 it is.

Why dont you pull the drain plug on the trans and any other piece that has oil in it. If it has water in it that will be the first thing to come out. (oil floats on water) That will tell you something. A lot of water could mean more issues, very little, you may be ok.

Thanks for the tip. I am gonna do that tomorrow and see what I find. I'll also pull the gear shift cover and see what things look like, i.e. rust, etc.

This evening I was finally able to get to the tractor transmission and axle oils.
And I am yet to start my "fluid research", but I feel pretty good about what I saw (so far) and I wanted to share.

I drained:
gear transmission fluid - no clear water came out first. fluid was a light brown to toffee color. thicker than range fluid.
range transmissoin fluid - no clear water came out first. fluid was a light brown to toffee color. thinner than gear fluid.
rear axle oil - no water in the oil at all. good dark looking oil.

** I have no clue what this fluid should look like. When I drained the engine oil about 1.5 gallons of clear water came out first.
However on these drains, no clear water came out and it was all one color.

Attached is a Case IH Hy-Tran fluid color photo I found online.

Both the transmission fluids looked like the left sample, also mixed with water "fallout" - LOL :D inside as that example.
I did not see signs of darker rust type colors from rust. And all the fluid seemed to be mixed well... i.e. no plain water.
This leads me to think that there should not be a ton of rust or water inside, and I could get away with running it and changing fluids

I did not pull the gear box cover yet, and may not.
When I move the gear shifter through the gears in the box it sounds and feels good to me. In neutral the shaft spins, sounds, and feels good.

So that's the goods, and I still have reading to do but I wanted to share being I opened this thread and everyone has been so kind and knowledgeable.
I only know enough about things like this to get me in trouble.

After research it appears these fluids are okay, and I am not experiencing rust, etc. in the power-train of this tractor.
I decided to more forward and rebuild the engine, put it all back together, and toss a few Hail Marys at it. :D

Keeping the tractor alive rather than sending to the salvage yard! :applause:

I just returned from the machine shop and they need more accurate machining clearances for the crankshaft and cylinder bore.
The service manual - attached - is not accurate to the level they need to turn the crankshaft.
They said it will be quoted as two numbers out to 4 digits, i.e. 2.3345/2.4343 or something similar.

Does anyone know where I can get this data?

p.s. - What's the best section to post a "rebuild thread" for this rebuild?

Here is the thread you want to post your rebuild in: Case-IH (and ask for specs).

I cannot answer your questions on specs.

Best of luck to you on the rebuild.
