Flood

I can understand helping folks who are victims of hurricanes or earthquakes or tornadoes but those who decide they want to live on a flood plain or on some barrier island should learn to deal with it on their own or move.

Our hopes and prayers are with you all. I can't imagine what you must be going through. My mom's family were all farmers from SE Mo. and Western Tn. and we spent a lot of summer vacations up there.

God Bless you all and keep safe.

dave1949 got it right. In the long term the levees cause more trouble then they solve. The west branch of the Susquehanna is a prime example. Leves at lockhaven hold the water in as soon as it gets past the next area gets more water then ever before. Flood plains are just that an area for the water to spread out......use it for farming but do not build on it.

I see your logic but know it is not that simple for some. I grew up in a flood plain but bought on the other side of the road so now our house is 100 foot higher than the high water mark.

Sorry my gut prediction came true and destruction sounds like it is going to be HUGE. Crest of 5 foot over the levee is very serious.

Paducah Sun update this TUE morning:

SMITHLAND The unexpected increase in river-level forecast depths Monday forced the evacuation of a portion of the town and attention paid to Ledbetter.
David Koon, deputy director of emergency management in Livingston County, said National Weather Service forecasts call for the Ohio River to crest at 58 feet or more Friday. The improved levee will protect the town to only 53 feet. Previous forecasts called for the river to crest near 52 feet.

At lunch they blew the lower section. Dropping the MS level is letting the OHIO drop some as well so that is some help to those on the OHIO.

most of northern ohio had an additional inch or so of rain overnight. Our flood control dry dam has been closed for a while and is about to back up onto the road I use daily...

We were taxed recently because the rain water runs off up here and heads down south they are taking tax money from US up here and giving it to people who build in those flood zones if that just heats my drawers good  :( stupid government making me pay for soemthing some normal person should know better than to do or at least should not get paid for doing it...
