flat rear tire on 790

Ugh- hello everybody... been awhile. I've been lurking around, working mostly, whether at home or at work.

Anyway- working in the garden tonight, got through and loaded all the tools in my loader for the trip to the shop. Driving too fast, I hit a bump and jostled the contents just enough that a garden hoe jumped out and ended up under my rear tire. Cut a slash in the tread area about 1/2 inch long or so. I didn't even hear it leaking, I just noticed the fluid leaking out of the cut as I drove the tractor to the shop.
I have her parked now with the cut at the 12 o'clock position. Air is leaking slowly, fluid is staying put. I'd like to get it fixed one way or the other.

Can I simply patch or plug the tire without taking it off the tractor?

Tractor is a JD790, 160 hours, R-1 tires...

Tube or tubeless? If tubeless, you could try a plug, or 2 or 3. No way to know without trying it.

The local tire guy is on his way to fix it today. He has a mobile operation, and seems to be good people.
Several folks I talked to said you COULD plug it, but the odds of it holding weren't good. One of them recommended this guy.
He says he can boot the tire (patch on the inside) and pump the fluid right back in the tire. The only problem with this is at 40 mph or so the tire is so out of round that the vibration will jar your teeth loose. I assured him I have no plans of driving my tractor over 11.8 mph. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I can't wait- I had 4 hours worth of work to accomplish when this happened- it has grown to 6 hours worth. It'll be nice to get her movin' again.
