I have found this Flail mower that looks a little rough but could be worthwhile to purchase. What do you guys think? Is it worth $600? It is a 6 footer.

Have you visually seen it? Does it have all of it's knives? How old is it? Clean up the rust and repaint it if there isn't any rust through and it should last quite awhile. Try asking if they'll take $500 for it or less and go from there. How's the bearing in it? Consider the cost of a new one and compare it to this one even if you have to replace parts, but as long as parts are available I'd say go for it.

I've heard of flail mowers, what is their advantage over bush hogs/finish mower? How do they work? Also, how do you put pictures up cause I am dying to put some of my 3930 on!

To upload a photo just go to the discussion forum you want to post in and start a new post and click on the paper clip at the top of the page, that is for attachments and then click browse and select the file from your computer you want and then click upload. If you are responding to a post on a thread and want to post a photo , click advanced and then you will see the button for attaching a photo ..I am surprised a moderator has not answered this for you..

bought an alamo flail from a farmer in springfield last year gave $400, so I would think $600 is a bit high, nice thing about the flail I can mow the grass and run it thru the fields. the the rotating knives it rolls over rocks and stumps without much fuss unlike my brush hog

How far are you from Sikeston Jack? I just bought a 6-1/2 footer at the auction there on Monday. $150 out the door, they even loaded it on my trailer. Needs a PTO shaft, a pair of drive belts, two lift pins, and a coat of paint. Haven't sourced the parts yet, but I'm guessing the total investment should come in under $250.

Check the gearbox and the knives.
These things can be a tad expensive if they need replacement.
Best to try it out before you buy, but I know that's not always possible.
I'd try to get the price down to $500.

Ah, Rolla MO. Went to UMR 1963-65.

I sold one just like that one and a new set of knives last summer for 100.00 and a case of coor's lite to buy a bush cutter because my tractor had a hard time cutting tall grass due to under powered. Then I bought a new tractor last month with twice the power. Now I'm thinking why did I sell :confused2::confused2:

+1 on parts being spendy. I bought a 72" Mott (Alamo) from a local golf course a few years back for $500. Does a great job until you hit some heavy brush or a big rock. After about an hour of mowing in a "rough area", nearly half the knives were broken. Mine has grass blades in it, but to use hammer (brush) knives, you have to change the cutter shaft. Also check the cutter shaft for straightness and bearings for smooth operation. A new cutter shaft for my 6' was $1100:shocked:. Flail-Master - Mower Replacement Parts, Commercial Riding Mower Parts, Rotary Cutter Parts, Blade grinders, Trimmer Line, Mowing Accessories - Flail Master - Flailmaster - has most all parts for lots of brands of flails. There is a seller from Oregon on ebay that imports new flails and other implements from China. I bought a 3 pt. log splitter from him and it works well....Dan.

I 'm a little way from Sikeston. It's down in the boothell and I am up in Rolla about 100 mile west of St. Louis on I-44. If they had another one for that price I'd buy it. Where was the auction? Is it a regular thing?

First Monday of every Month. The rest of the month these guys travel around conducting equipment auctions in other areas. This and this may help
