Been there done that 2000 Cherokee 4.0 Put in evaprator and a year later compressor. That was 4 years and 3 years ago. I now put 2 cans a year of AC Pro in it. The Jeep is a bullet proof vehicle except for the AC

Shouldnt have to wait long I would think.. Run it, get it cold, and sniff.. Then stop it and sniff again. Your friend should have one or access to one.

OK ~ I bet that is in my future too...You obviously agree...enough is enough ...it is just cheaper and makes more sense to add the freon in the summer that keep feeding the dealer for all the replacements that they are not even sure are the problem...? You are right...I love my Jeep....I hope I get 500,000 miles out of it ...it is bullet proof except for the AC....I have always said my Cherokee Classic with the 6 cyl. is like a cross between a sports car and truck and a station wagon...

Good that you were able to use something off the shelf to fix the leak! I tried a product called Dura Cool available locally and as I was emptying the leak repair can, I saw a cloud of vapours emanating from under the van. The vehicle is a mini-van with rear air and I'm thinking the leak must be a big one after seeing that cloud of vapours! I'm not sure if it is worthwhile to try another dose of this stuff or bite the bullet and go to an AC place.

If it's just the rear air failing, you may be able to have the rear lines capped off. IE. only have the front air working.

If you have to have the whole van ice-cold, then you will want everything fixed. Cut n' cap lines + refill is cheaper solution if you can live w/o rear air. Any competent+honest AC shop should be able to advise you.

I always liked the handling on the older Cherokee's I've driven - they got that platform well sorted from the get go. Enough so that it shows in the SUV single vehicle accident stats.

Here's hoping that stop leak works for you. I've seen Cherokee dashes taken apart for that repair.... pretty painful if you have to pay somebody to do it. Not much fun if you are doing it yourself.

Thanks Dave...keep your fingers crossed for me...If my adding freon doesn't work and then adding more every year doesn't work then I will find someone to fiddle with it...but not the dealer...So I hope just adding freon every year a couple of times works...I would be happy with that..

Up here in salt land (aka The Great White North), I've seen 4 year old vehicles with corrosion damage (to the point of broken connections) on wiring harnesses. Granted, those particular harnesses/installations could have been executed a little better at the factory (design issue, not manufacturing error), but it is safe to say that the Let's-keep-the-auto-plants-rolling-full-tilt solution (aka brine) that they put on the roads here in the Winter kills wiring fast.

There may be other specific issues 'oyl has in mind though....

I use 2 products from Rust Check to protect wiring and connectors. The Red can stuff is more liquid, penetrates fast. The Green can stuff is thicker (grease like), builds up more of a coating.

This kind of approach is mandatory to keep old wiring working up here, but is not a bad idea for slowing oxidization wherever you are....
