Not really. We where fishing at the pond this evening and this group of six wild hogs showed up on the dam. I'm sure the grass will be all tore up there, but at least it was fun seeing them.

I'll bet catching one of those critters with a fly rod would keep a guy busy for an hour or so.

I love it! Those are wild? No such thing around these parts.

Eddie,
We're fortunate enough not to have wild hogs, so I don't know much about them. Can you tell if those are razor backs, domestic hogs gone wild, or a mix?

Those hogs are probably just the beginning of trouble for years to come!

From personal experience I can say that if you shoot one of those on the dam, it will roll down into the water. Then you really will be fishing for hogs. I had to go get the tractor to pull that heavy, wet ******* up the slippery dam. Surf and turf dinner. :)

Hogs are very common around here. We shoot them year round and they just keep coming back. There are a lot more hogs then deer here. This group has been showing up at the same time for the last couple of days. We have company coming this weekend and he has never shot a hog, so we are waiting until they get here to see what happens. Then after they leave, Karen will shoot them. I've shot enough of them that it's not a big deal anymore. She has shot 3 so far, and is excited to get another. She has a youth model Remington 700 in 7mm-08 that she loves. She also uses it for shooting snakes and beavers. Best shot I saw her make was hitting a swimming beaver in the head at 100 yards!!!!

No telling where they all came from, but you will see all sorts of variations in coloring on them. I've seen them with large white sections in the middle of them, lots of spotted ones, red ones, brown ones and of course, all black. Some have the razor back look, others hardly have any hair at all. Unlike domestic pigs, they all have straight tails and their ears are standing up.

Tusks are rare. I've only shot a few with tusks of any size, and the biggest was a sow that had them over 2 inches long, but only weighed a little over 100 pounds. She surprised me, I was expecting her to be a boy!!!

We're going to try for them tonight.

When my dad was a boy in the SC low country people used to notch the ears of their hogs for identification and let them run wild. The notch pattern was recorded at the court house. I can't remember how he said they divided a hog that someone killed and found it belonged to someone else.

Strike one. We've been waiting until last night for my buddy to get a chance at shooting one. He's never killed a hog before and was hoping this would be his first one. It all worked out perfectly, the hog came out right after 7pm, walked to the edge of the water, posed broadside, walked a little bit, stood broadside, then did it again. The third time, Greg was ready for him and took the shot. It was a clean miss!!! I don't know what happened, he's thinking it's his rifle. We made the mistake of not going to the range that morning, and don't really know if the gun is on or not. Oh well, Karen's up next. We'll probably be out there this evening.

Correction. We found the pig a little bit ago. Turns out he made a perfect shot, but the bullet deflected off of the shoulder and gutted the hog. We didn't find any blood at the spot where she was shot, we didn't hear the impact, and she ran off like she was fine. We looked around last night, but didn't find any sign at all. Then today, we went back and looked around a little farther out and into the thicker jungle. His wife found the pig about 200 yards from where he shot her, and nowhere near the direction that she ran off.

280 didn't get the job done. I don't know the weight of the bullet, but mentioned to him that it was too light and it didn't perform very well. That pig should have died right where it was standing.

On the good side, there is one less pig out there, and after she was shot, more pigs showed up to the corn and ate it all. Tonight Karen will be out there with her 7mm-08 waiting for them to show up again.

As you found out a pig can run a long ways even after a good shot from a rifle. The only guaranteed way to knock one down is a head shot. We get them all colors and sizes as well. The little white and black spotted ones have light colored meat and taste like store bought pork. The really big ones have rubbed their tusks down to nothing digging in all the rocky county around here. But the medium size ones can have some pretty large tusks.

I assume you are shooting slugs? I would think a slug would be pretty effective.

No. They are escaped from the so called "hunting" operations that are so popular in that part of the world. They charge people to hunt these "Wild Russian Boar" and occasionally some get out of the petting zoo/hunt clubs fences. With few real predators such as lions they reproduce like rabbits.
