Tractor
None
For the L5740.

I decided to invest in new chains and binders for the new trailer and tractor. The chains are Transport Grade 70 Domestic Binder Chains-Grade 70; 3/8" x 16'. The binders are the QuikBinder Plus G80; SWL 7,100 lbs.
I attached 1 chain per corner of the tractor, 1 chain through the torsion tube of the FEL, and 1 chain for the road grader.

I discovered that old surplus ammo boxes will hold 1 chain and 1 binder each for storage.

It traveled smooth and everything stayed tight and secure.

Good Job !! The only thing I would say is keep the chains off the tires. with any flexing the chains will damage the tires.

What would you recommend as an anchor point for the rear end (to avoid tire contact)? I wondered about that, but there does not seen to be many hardpoints that do not conflict with tire contact.

Also, I want to attach shackles to the front brush guard/weight rack. Do you happen to know what size shackle is needed for 3/8 chain?

alot of times just moving from the pipe spool to the stake pocket will get you away from the tires, and cross chaining from side to side will give you clearance.3/8 chain is good for about 5400 lbs so size your shackle accordingly.

RFB, placing your chains in an X brace pattern is actually stronger and will get you away from your tires. Hook it on the left side of the tractor and chain to the right side of trailer, cross the chain on the other side to have one pulling against the other. Less chance of your load shifting that way.

As a general rule, if you think 1 chain will hold it down, put 2 to be safe....think 3 will do it? Put 4. Over-chaining is not a bad habit.

Blade,

The Grade 70 Domestic Binder Chain that I purchased is quoted with a SWL of 6600 lbs. Will fire hose bumpers protect against the suggested tire damage?

slightly off topic but it appears you have a bit to much air in your rear tires? With wheel weights and the tractor chained down you should have atleast 2 full bars on the trailer I would think. The bar that is mostly on the trailer isn't laying flat and hence my comment. Otherwise, looks good!

There is not really much air in the tires. They are filled with "Bio-Tire" to above the top of the rim, and then topped with air to the rated psi.

I am trying to understand the geometry of X bracing. If using the method I used: >0--0< then any tendency to lift on either side by toppling left or right is immediately damped by the fact that the pull is away from the anchor point. If I used the 0X0 method, it seems that one is now capable of lifting either side since the movement is towards, not away from the anchor point?

What am I not understanding?

Criss Cross the chains under the tractor IE left side to right side of trailer/right side to left side of trailer. That will fix the rub on the rear tires

Criss cross or X method example, do this under the tractor and it will eliminate the tire rub. You will also have side to side securement along with front to rear securement using this method. Only pic I could find on the net but it gives the idea.
