82 ford 17004x4

Hi and welcome. I am not familiar with the 1700 but first I would look for a shifter lever to see is it is disengaged. Check the linkage. Also, it could be a sheared pin or bolt in the drive shaft at the U joints.

Others on here may be more familiar with your machine.

Good luck.

I had a Ford 1700 4x4 from '82 until 2009. It is a fantastic tractor - never had a moments problem with it . Traded for current 2009 Kubota.

Your 4WD problem is definitely linkage or sheared bolt in the forward driveshaft/U joint.

Welcome to TBN and enjoy the tractor.

I just had another thought - at times that little beast can be very difficult to shift into 4WD. As you pull up on the 4WD lever, have the tractor in a very low gear(forward) and slowly let out the clutch. The lever should "POP" up and engage the 4WD. Try this same trick with the tractor in reverse. Some times I would have to do this to get it to engage properly. Remember, as you pull upward on the 4WD lever - if it does not "POP' up that last inch or so the gearing has not gone into 4WD. Hope this helps.

Thanks for reply! I have checked under shift cover and everything is working right there and have tried several times to ease it in while moving but nothing so I'm trying to drop front drive shaft now. I drained fluid out thinking I would have to drop back unit that drive shaft sets in but later learned I won't have to do that but when I hit lever to use front bucket to raise front end it didn't move so I'm guessing that fluid controlled more than just gears in 4x4 box. Anyway when I hit lever, milky looking oil began to fill gear box so I guess I need to refill with fresh fluid. Does anyone know will I have to bleed lines after refilling since I tried using front cylinders and do you know is that hydraulic fluid? I don't have manual on it yet.
