Hi, I have been lurking on these forums the past couple days trying to do as much research as possible.

I have 5 acres of land and my grandfathers 20 year old JD 285 broke down earlier last week so I decided it was time to upgrade to something bigger.

I went to my local JD dealer and got a quote on the X720 with the 62 inch mower and the 47 inch quick hitch snow blower. I was quoted $12,065 for all of this (not including tax). I would appreciate it if the more experienced people here could advise me if this is a decent deal or not. Thanks in advance.

First of all "Welcome to the forum":D

List is $12,499 for your configuration, that is more than I am willing to spend on a gas lawn mower. I think you should be able to get a better price on that unit. If you look around some more the X748 and X749 would be more desireable. Also look into a two thousand series tractor which start close in price and have 0% finance offers. I suspect you can get better pricing on the small tractors (2305,2320) as these are alot more popular and may be available in dealers inventory.

I agree with jenkinsph, for that much money a sub CUT or a used CUT would be potentially better for the money. More flexibility and since you have 5 acres, you can handle other projects as they come up.

I think he needs a real tactor like a BX JD2305 or MF GC instead of a garden tractor on steroids.

+1 When I was shopping very, very similar gear a year ago, I could have purchased the 2305 for the same money and a BX for less. I agree. The X series is a plush ride, but pricey. The X series has its place, but isn't substitute for a tractor on 5 acres.

I really don't know what, if anything the amount of land someone owns has to do with what they buy. I have a friend that has over 100 acres of land, but only maintains about 1 acre as lawn. Sure, for the price of that X720, the OP could buy a used pick up truck with a cab, heat, and air conditioning, and it would be a lot more vehicle for his money. Let's try to identify needs, intended uses, and give the best help we can. Some of us do need at least a 3000 series for an acre of yard, but that is a different issue.
In this case, the OP asked if the price he was given on a tractor he had chosen was a good one, or not, and I see only one response to that question. JD's go for very close to list around here, so I can't comment on his price except to awknoledge that it is pretty much MSRP.

The tractor lists at $10449 so the snowblower, front hitch, and front driveshaft are running you $1.5K. Its possible you could do better but around here anything off list is as good as you can expect.

You could consider a used X4x5, X5x5, or X7xx. I've never had a single issue with mine and that seems to be the general consensus on them... that they're well built. And I agree with Jenkinsph that I'd be getting a diesel if I were to do it again. But mostly for the convenience and fuel efficiency as my X475 is the same as the X700 and I've never found it underpowered.

You might also consider an X540 if all you're ever going to do is mow and throw snow.

I think he needs a real tactor like a BX JD2305 or MF GC instead of a garden tractor on steroids.
LBrown, you might want to consider that a number of people think the very same thing about the models you're mentioning before you plug this into every single thread about the X700 series. Because the models you mention don't mow lawns anywhere near as well and its often for that reason alone that people buy an X700.

Based on what you DID tell us,

1. You want something bigger than the old JD 285
2. You want to plow some serious snow, (deductive reasoning) because you are pricing a Big Boy snow blower, at a Big Boy cost.
3. You mention 5 acres. How is this relevant in any way, since you mention it?
4. Your title says, "First time Tractor buyer" which suggests you are looking to make your first purchase of a big ticket item such as this? No doubt wanting to make a quality decision.

Your "come back" with more input would better assist those offering to help.
