So tomorrow they deliver a new Woodmaxx 78H flail mower. I'll be powering it with a Mahindra 2545 shuttle. 45 hp with 39.5 at the PTO. Since I have never used one before are there any sit tips that I should consider before I go knee deep in this. I read that this model should be run with just the roller touching. And the front slightly up. IMG_20190731_124423056.jpgIMG_20190731_124429008.jpgIs this true? I'll be mowing about 7 acres of this.

Good Morning Mr. Stevens,

if you have time read the threads and posts about flail mowers as we have provided several lifetimes of flail mower operation and maintenance tips for using flail mowers for the new user.

Before we get any further with this I want you to just read this and not be in a hurry to mow as YOU need to understand how your flail mower works and how it operates using the verticut method grass and brush mowing.

The instruction manual for your flail mower provides you with the information on how to assemble it and care for it.
The greasing intervals for your flail mower are too short and I have no idea why they recommend using so little grease for the NSK bearings they use.

The rear roller is what is used to adjust the cutting height. The side skids are used to protect the flail mower rotor and the knives from becoming damaged.

When you adjust the flail mower you need a bubble level to do this properly. The bubble level/torpedo level is placed on the gearbox and the top link is used to adjust the mower for level. After you level the flail mower you can open the rear trash door to measure the cutting height of the flail mower by using a small ruler to measure the distance from the bottom of the knife edge to ground. if you have an asphalt driveway or concrete floor this is easy to do.

To save time, brakes and fuel, you can position your tractor in the center of the field or fields you are mowing and mow in spiral pattern from the center as you will not have to stop, reverse, turn around and then begin mowing again in the opposite direction..

You have enough power to mow down to 2 inches in cutting height the first time at a slow operating speed and if your flail mower has the side slicer knives you will be able to recut the clippings and they will dissolve quickly.

Just take your time and let the mower work at a SLOW steady pace. You are going to want to check the chaff screen every 45 minutes or so as you will be pulling in a lot of dust and mowing chaff as you mow. When you mow again at the 2 inch height your chaff screen will not clog up so quickly.

My father had a 1953 Ford Jubilee that he used with his John Deere 25A finish flail mower

Read the flail mower thread before you assemble the flail mower as it will only help you and not hinder you.

We look forward to seeing pictures of your mowing job as we love to see pictures and videos of flail mowers working.

I have the 78 offset on a kioti ck3510 - 30 hp pto.

I'e used both hammer and knives. The hammers are a lot heaver so spinup needs to be GENTLE, and it will turn the grass into tea leaves! these will disintegrate quickly.

The knives will make it look a lot like a mowed yard, clippings wise - and on tall grass you'll have a brown carpet over everything the next day. it WILL disintegrate in a week or so and the grass should come back. mine has.

I mow mostly horse pasture (hay and some weeds) and take it to 2-4" height in one pass. When it's very tall (4 foot) or anything wet you gotta slow down. It will leave it chopped up nicely - again, the carpet of dead stuff.

i've nto chopped anything twice - I have 20 acres to mow, no time for that.

I rarely get a bog, unless I'm mowing dirt/water.

Uneven ground...because of the big roller in the back if the ground is uneven you'll get skips, spots where the mower rides high and the grass isn't clipped as short as everywhere else.

The top link has NOTHING to do wtih height. YOu use the roller and 3pt then adjust the top link to be in the middle of the slot on the mower so it can pivot up/down over terrain.

Lower the mower, bring it up just a bit (watch it when opertating the 3pt lever) and go. If you're too low the skids will leave marks when moving straight and gouges when turning - uneven ground on turns can do that too.

Go for it . . . from your pictures you provided . . . that is nothing that flail can't handle.

Thanks for all the great guidance. I never thought of adjusting with a level. Will do. It was nice seeing someone mention a Ford Jubilee. That was my favorite tractor of all time. I lost it when I had to make a cross country move. Did a lot of work with that bugger. I will take pictures and tell you how I make out.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to try to cut it pretty low. My goal is to reclaim this field for horse hay. Going to be a tough job. I will go slow as suggested.

My beat to snot 30+yr old JD25A made my field go from 4-6’ high to 2” in one pass. Did it in 2nd low, had a great time. Could have gone faster but I enjoy mowing the field. Sometimes I got into 3rd as daylight wanes.

My machine is a MF35 Utility, about 30ish at the PTO.
