First project with the salvaged barn wood

Most all of the wood I salvaged is hemlock...milled on site to build the barn. There is some hickory mixed in...most of the hickory was in the roof purlins I took off. The barn was built in the 1930's by my great Uncle Jeeter (that was really what my Mom's family called him) and an old fellow named Benfield who lived in a cabin on the edge of my great-grandfather's property and helped on the farm.

Very nice! Barn wood is absolutely beautiful when it takes on those colors.

I do have a question-what do you do to make the new saw cuts look aged? I couldn't see any place where it looked like fresh cuts, so I'm assuming you must have a method to make them disappear or blend in with the rest of the patina.

On most of my pieces, I cover the cut edges with trim strips from other pieces. I've cut several boards for a table I'm working on and I have to have clean edges to glue, so I save the rough edges to trim out the smaller pieces I make. Also, for corners and such, one of the tricks I have used is putting an old, almost worn out belt on my belt sander and smoothing the corners with that. It doesn't take too much off, and slightly burns the wood and gives it a more aged look.
