First poison ivy of the year?

I had never heard of the hot shower thing til last year when my son tried it. He said it really did work, not to cure but to stop the itch. Said it would itch like crazy at first then go away.

Yeah, it really does work, and I've read about it in a medical dictonary on the why it works.

Since we moved to our new place, I have had PI at least 6 times. The only thing that has helped it the hot water treatment every 6 hours or so. I will be starting my war soon...

Most will get it if exposed enough...

Often the first exposure may not trigger a reaction.

Poison Oak is my personal sworn enemy... I have gone on search and destroy missions on the my parents 17 acres for years... proud to say it is just about gone...

My property was packed full and it took 5 years to win the war...

I would get it just from the dust when running the tractor.

Zanfel has helped me a lot...

Of course steroids will knock it right down... but steroids can have side effects.

Mom would get it real bad... she was on prednisone for something else and hasn't had a breakout...

Real nasty stuff the entire poison family...

I like the Zanfel too. Another thing that has helped me when it's between my finger and up to my elbows believe it or not, is the orange hand cleaner with Pumice.?? I'm going to try the "hot" water thing next time.

The hot water works because it triggers a histamine release... similar to any burn type injury...

I'm not a doctor... but, I work with them daily.

Just wanted to throw out that disclaimer...

Other remedies that seem to be effective are...

Ocean Swimming

Swimming in very highly chlorinated public pools

Extremely cold temperatures like when there is snow outside...

Had a real bad case and needed to work in Tahoe on a project... almost didn't go because I was so miserable... the cold weather really helped keep it in check...

I'm one of the lucky few who can roll in poison ivy with barely any problems at all. Poison oak is a little worse but it's not too bad.

About 15% to 30% of the population (according to a Wikipedia article) are not allergic to Urushiol, sparing them the effects of poison ivy. It is possible for these people to develop an allergy after repeated exposure, so if you are immune to poison ivy, don't take it for granted!

I've had the same several times... the worst is when my eyes were swollen shut for 3 days... got the steroids that time.

Usually the big blister is from direct contact with the sap... like when cutting or damaging the plant...

Hope you recover with minimal discomfort.I wouldn't wish poison ivy,oak or sumac on my worst enemy!

SO HOW DID YOU GET RID OF IT? CHEMICAL SPRAY OR MOWING OR WHAT?
